Given that Planet X had a January sale with 20 per cent off large orders last year, I was just wondering if there was anybody out there who could tell me whether this was an annual occurrence or just a one-off?

January this year, that is.

Have you tried asking Planet X themselves? They may not say yes - but they may not say no either.
  • What a whimsical notion. ;) Well let's give it a go then.
  • Given the VAT rise, bound to be.

January 'this year' was nine months ago....

IIRC, they had a sale because they were shifting stock ahead of a warehouse move, so I suspect it may have been a one-off, sadly.

There's no way that any business with common sense is gong to tell you "don't buy now, it'll be cheaper in 2 months".

Well if memory serves the sale began last year and ran into January 2010.

My thoughts exactly and the reason I started this thread to begin with...

Yes - totally agree - what I was thinking when I first saw this thread.
unless the Op gets through to someone naive from Planet-X then there its likely there will be no confirmation of a future sale at this point.
Besides which the nature of Jan sales will depend on how much stuff they shift over the next few weeks so its too early to call anyway.
Most stores will be stocked up for the pre-christmas shopping. From now to Xmas eve is when the big stores make most of their yearly profits.
Telling you now that they are having a stonking sale in Jan would be like shooting themselves in the foot.
    Can I upgrade???

You've lost me with that one mate.
They would be stupid to say 'Yes' to you, and no-one but Planet X can answer this question anyway. I doubt in the current financial climate that historical data here is going to answer your question. All you can say is:

    Q. Will Planet -X have a sale?. A - Yes, As will most stores
    Q WIll it be a heavily discounted sale? A - d'know

    Can I upgrade???

Please bear in mind that it was not my idea to ask PX such a silly question, hence the thread. PX's January sale track record was exactly what I was looking for. Any conclusions I draw from said data are my own concern.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the warehouse move sale a separate one altogether?

    perhaps... but

I got my TT bike around this time last year from them. I was told by a friend in early October (who used to be a sponsored PX rider) when i went to try out a TT frame for size, to hang on a month as they were having a clearance sale in advance of their move to deplete stock.

and lo and behold.... a sale in Oct/Nov. I don't know how long it lasted - i think into the new year....

I cant recall when they moved warehouses...
  • I was in the showroom a few months ago and heard one of the staff talking about the fact that they had lots of things they would be putting on sale soon, ex demo stuff.
A few weeks ago they did sell lots of ex demo/showroom stuff but it was nowhere near as cheap as the stuff they sold in sale about a year ago.. SL pro's at £750 etc
  • Interesting reading - heres some of the current news -

    - January sale - well probably have a beat the vat rise january sale in december !

    however

    - We are now sold out of sram red and procarbon bikes very low , so any sale will reflect the inventory we have and want to sell , we have a lot of guerciotti stock and a decent number of athena groupsets .

    - Procarbons are very low , but were just finalising a large production for early 2011 arrival of Procarbon with sram force - were trying to squeeze it in at the magic 999 price point to put us way ahead in the value stakes - I think weve nailed it and were a few days from finalising

    - Nanolights - again were pretty low now but we are working on a january arrival with full sram red bike , should be under 2k with a good set of wheels

    - We have a new carbon bike arriving - bit shorter top tube , more traditional geometry less compact , mark lovatt has just signed it off and its going to be either replace the procarbon , or well keep the procarbon

    - We have a new "superbike" that were developing with an italian bike designer who runs the Guru team , its a 100% made in italy , tube to tube frame - its basically the evolution of a frame he made from Michaele Bartoli - Lovatt has just tested the first bike and reckons its by far and away the best bike hes ever ridden - super stiff , ultralight , yet subtle titamium like rider characteristics - id guess retail circa 2k per frame with all frames custom made

    - We are moving warehouse again ! so for sure there will be more warehouse move sales , this time were adding 20,000 sq ft to the current warehouse - so weve tripled size in a year !

So - id guess well have a january sale in december - though current inventory means there wont be any sram red or procarbons . As we are switching some of our production to prebuilt / fixed spec bikes our priority will be to clear down on whatever we are sat on

    - We also have a whole new production of merino clothing coming - some ultrafine baselayers , medium weight , and heavier 250g - weve been working on these for 18 months now and final production is now happening .

    Thats enough for now

Thanks for the update - any news/updates on your titanium frames? You don't seem to have had much stock for a while

    Many thanks.

Dave, me old mucker, Will your equivalents at on-one be selling the Reba Team, 120mm with Maxle light for 300 squids again like they were the month I had to pay a huge electricity bill?

I think they should just for Karma value really :?

    re - titanium
on the titanium front weve been pretty slow off the mark this year and our inventory reflects our lack of planning
the good news is were pretty much sorted things - weve three frames coming , all made by van nicholas , off the top of me head -

pro road ti - slightly more traditional geometry but much stiffer , straight seatstays not curved , classic ti road

sportive - hour glass stays , short drop brakes not long drop , with mudguard eyelets , only for 25mm clearance - basically a little bit racier than our current sportive

new model - weirdo commuter / all rounder / do it all / utilitarian / cyclo cross - trying to push the envelope a bit on this -
    - full rack mounts / mudguards
    - alfine compatable
    - disc only
    - 45mm tyre clearance

All frames are coming early 2011

    RE - Rockshox
no idea , our rockshox deals come and go , we cleared out the uk distributor two months ago and that stock has gone now

Weve had a big push with our italian connections - and some great new suppliers - six2 , biotex , FRM , Selle monte grappa , Pissei and more to come

That new ti frame sounds tasty... what disc fork are you using?

Thanks Dave, Very interesting .... I particularly like the sound of a racier sportive frame with mudguard eyelets - no one seems to be doing a Ti frame with that combination of attributes.

I'll look forward to seeing the pricing and geometry when they arrive.

Will they be here for this winter?

    Thanks very much.
