Scott scale 50 upgrade

im looking to buy a new bike sooner or later for around £800ish mark and a friend of mine is selling his Scott scale 50 for £500 and im thinking mabye get that and spend the extra money upgrading to sid forks and new brakes etc... what do you guys think would this be better or should i wait till new year and get myself a new bike for around £800ish???
