Winter Tyres What Type and Thickness

Hi all,
After a summer riding trail centres and the like my Maxxis Ignitors are ready for the bin,
What tyres would you guys reccomend for the winter, also what size tyre do you think is best.
The bike came with a 2.4 front and 2.2 rear , which i changed fro 2.1 ignitors.
So are thinner tyres better for winter, and would you ride with different or same size combinations.
