Hi,

I currently have a fairly short commute to work, but I am currently using a fairly nice roadbike to do the trip on. Problems with that are that I am going to go through expensive components a lot faster but it also has look cleats and I can't be doing with messing about with the shoes at work, and also I don't like leaving it locked up when I go to the gym etc.

So question is...What fairly cheap bike (maybe single speed for less weight, maintenance) do you guys generally reccomend for 5 mile trips?

I was thinking maybe a second hand langster? As I want to still be quick. But I am open to any other solid suggestions to what won't get nicked and will do what I need whatever the weather. (must be able to tae mudguards)

Thank you

    B'Twin Vitamin?

More seriously, scan ebay etc and see what comes out, something fairly tatty looking will reduce the theft likelyhood, plenty of 1980's steel framed road bikes go for reasonable money, a few quid on selected bits and your away.
What sort of journey is that 5 miles, fairly flat I presume, no way could I sensibly go SS on my commute.

  • You could see if your company is in the cycle to work scheme. Although I think it's not as good as it was since the new rules came in.

I've got a Specialized Allez for my commute. It's quick, relatively light and makes a good winter bike with mudguards on.

  • I just brought a B Twin Fitness 2, my first hybrid and it's a right hoot ! That's good value for money the transmission (sram x5) worked flawlessly on my old commuter so i see no reason this would any less. Also the Carrera Gryphons come up cheap every now and again but not as nice in my books.
  • +1 for the Btwin fitness. A friend has the womens specific version and can't fault it for her 5 mile commute.

I have a Btwin vitamin for knocking about on and have used it for my 6 mile commute occasionally. Not ideal in hilly Sheffield but does the job.

My commuter bike was a Spesh Allez til I wrote it off and now use a Spesh Tricross with full mudguards which I'm finding to be an excellent commuter.
