on my way home last night i was struck by the kind of banging crunching noise that i always fear. pulled over to the side of the road thinking one of my hubs or the bottom bracket had gone, but it turned out to be the single speed freewheel on my flip flop hub disassembling itself.

the particularly odd thing is that i was actually running the bike fixed at the time, so it wasn't even being used :?

the upshot of this is that i need a new freewheel. the only one i can find in 17t is the bog standard shimano bmx jobbie (i'm not even looking at the white industries ones). anyone used one before? any good? i don't really run the bike SS anymore, but it's nice to have the option for longer rides. the other one i was thinking was this bargain basement option on ebay as it's only going to be a backup anyway. any opinions or other options?

    I've got a Shimano SF-MX30 I took off my fixed. It's 18t. Barely used.

If I'm going to have a freewheel I may as well have 30 gears to go with it. Chuck it away and save a few grams

Been running Shimano freewheels all the time I've had a SS bike, a much better product than the £10 cr@p sold by LBS.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

The Shimano freewheels aren't too bad, mine lasted about 1000 miles through last winter before I went fixed. It's still usable but rough as toast...sounds horrible.

Take your Shimano freewheel and flood it with teflon lube spray if you can and or soak in a bath afterwards, seems the seals aren't that good, but a quick clean out will see another couple of 1000s miles - well it did for me anyway.
