Why do so many handlebars go no bigger than 44 cm? I am a very broad guy and I need at least 46 cm bars. It'd be nice to have more choice

there are quite a few 46cm available here...
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/c/cycle/7/Handlebars_-_Road/
...both alloy and carbon
once you are on the page, put the mouse pointer over the product name, a pop-up list of sizes will appear
http://www.dedaelementi.com do most, maybe all, models in 46cm as wellmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -

Nope. Only 2 of the bars on that Wiggle page are available in 46 cm, and they are both alloy
Will check the other site you listed shortly. Thanks for the post0 -
Try contacting the mfrs. Sometimes they offer wider bars than you'll usually find at shops and websites and can be special ordered.0

i'll see your nope and raise you...
there are 4 models of 46cm on the wiggle page from easton alone, including one carbon...
easton ea50, ea70 ergo, ea90aero, ec90 slx3 (carbon)
on the same page, time, use and zipp also have 46cm carbon barsmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
You should note that some handlebars are measured centre to centre while others are measured outside to outside. A 44cm centre to centre bar will be the same as a 46cm outside to outside.

Yes, you're right. I looked at the bars only in the box, which represent 20 of 94...

Well that's bloomin' complicated! How are you supposed to know which measuring system has been used?0 -

Tradition I'm afraid. ITM usually measure from outside to outside, Cinelli centre to centre
Normally the shop website will tell you. eg Ribble http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... TALHBAS460
If in doubt, always check the manufacturer's website.

Planet X ? I got some their own brand alloy bars from them a couiple of years ago in 46cm, availability didn't seem to be an issue. Not sure if they have carbon though.Gav2000
