Thinking about getting a set of these to replace my Avid Juicy's. I'd really like a set of brakes with excellent modulation and the reviews seem pretty favourable. Any info would be useful - particularly from any long term users.

Also, is the only difference between the k18 and 24's the pad contact adjuster?

thanks in advance

edit - sorry, wrong forum! - could the mods please move this to the buying advice section

I've got a pair of K24 and love them, and yes the only difference iirc is the pad contact adjuster.

I'd advise you to get something else though as they were discontinued a while again and it can be tricky getting parts from them....
  • The oro's have been replaced by the rx brakes. Go for the rx's, great brakes - look the business too. Although, if you've got deep enough pockets the 'r1' (xc) and 'the one' (am/dh) are some of the best brakes you can buy.

I got some avid elixers a while back. You can get them really cheap now, and they are aboslutely fantastic!

Ive never tries Formula's but I dont think you would be disappointed with elixers as an alternative

It's not hard to get Oro parts, Formula still carry them all and there are various UK retailers that carry them too, plus some parts are compatible with RX. There's certainly nothing better at the price, tbh there's not much better at twice the price, they're fantastic brakes.

The extra adjuster thing seems like a waste of money but I find it useful as you can use it to finetune the feel of the levers... I've got 2 sets so being able to set them up so that they both feel identical is handy. Not a killer selling point though, I'm sure I'd be happy with the K18s.

IMO it's very handy for adjusting the pad contact so both levers feel the same.

The biggest downside of the K24 over the k18 is the colour, the 18s looks so much better in black. If you can find some black or white K24 then go for them. I got a set of K24's in black from the UK distributor. :)

I own some Oros - came on the Zesty off the shelf. THey are superb. I've been using them for over a year now - A hard winter last year....caked in cack...Not so much as a bleed and they still stop you on a sixpence.

I have gone through at least 10 sets of pads though......
  • I have the K18 on my Commencal. They are really good. also find changing pads a complete doddle.

The pad usage depends on the quality of them Had some that lasted months, but often ben stuck and had to buy cheap copies that went down well quick.
    would recomend.

just get the oros if you want them. Parts are easy to get.

the adjuster is the only difference and is reto fit-able to the k18.

be aware that there was a new k24 in 2009.

I like and use Formula brakes.

Got one black set and one white set 8) The silver isn't so nice, shame it's the one that's so cheap really! The paint on the white ones isn't very good, chips easily, but that's trivial really- lots of brakes have better finish but don't stop you as well, doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

where did you get the white ones Northwind? was it as good a deal as you can get the silver ones for?
  • have some 3 year old k18 on my anthem, they came from a meta 5 i had, the brakes are great never overheat great stopping power for such a small unit only thing is pad clearance which can be tight but this is common to many brands, been thinking about upgrading them but what would i get that was just as light and just as powerfull, they take all the shit i can throw at them summer and winter, formula brakes been fine for me
    anthem x with many upgrades

  • I've been using K18's for the last year and I love em!

I can still use one finger for braking even though they're ready for a bleed.

I've tried a set of the rx, at low speed they're unusably brutal but once you're actually riding quickly the masses of power seems to give a lot of modulation and control, and the inital bite feel isn't as pronounced.
