Very sloppy head angle! Help!

I've just bought a 2002 Specialized Enduro frame and swopped all the bits from my Mantra on to it. The only thing is, the head angle is rediculously slack on it, making it sloppy to ride. This is what it looks like: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/E ... 010394.jpg

The forks are a little longer travel than the original spec ones, but are a near perfect match travel wise to the rear travel.

One thing I have noticed is that on the Specialized site, it says that the rear shock is 7.625" in length: http://www.specialized.com/gb/en/bc/SBC ... &gold_ses= When I meausure my shock it's nearly 3/4" shorter than this. The shock does need serviced as the lock-out doesn't work. Would it be possible that the shock is sagging by this much un-weighted due to needing a service? I've got 200 psi in it at the moment, but can pull the shock further apart.

Any help would be much appreciated, as the bike is an appauling ride at the moment :x

    sounds like a faulty shock.

  • Aye, that's what I'm thinking. Just looking at the owners manual for the frame now: http://cdn.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/pdf ... Manual.pdf

For my weight I should have 145psi in the shock. 200psi would be for someone weighing over 100kg's. Think because the shock is already part way through the travel then I'm needing more pressure to stop it bottoming out.

Oh well, of to TFT it goes

not really. as the shock is not fully extending it is in need of a lot of TLC. they will fully extend with almost Zero air in them.

The shock has an 'itch switch' doesn't it ? Does it work ?
Pretty sure that when its in short travel setting it actually keeps the shock slightly compressed, reducing the shock stroke / travel, could have a faulty switch / be stuck in short travel setting ?

It looks like that shock has sucked down. This is common on Fox shocks that haven't been serviced in a while. It is where air has leaked past an o-ring internal to the shock and got stuck between the o-ring and the seals on the air can. The air stuck in there acts a negative spring.

If you are confident with servicing shocks you can buy a replacement seal kit for the shock and service it yourself. If not, somewhere like Mojo will do it for you.
  • Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate everyone's opinions.

I spoke to TFT today and he mentioned about the air could be seeping past from the positive air chamber to the negative. Could be the itch switch though too.

I've booked the shock in with TFT for Thursday, so hopefully they'll get it fully operational again. I was tempted to buy a second hand shock, but chances are it'd just need serviced too so best to get the original one done. Original shock does have all the features I want too.

Will update on Friday when the shock should be back with me 8)
