Sizing question

I've got an old racing bike that I bought off of ebay for £50 as a winter trainer or a bike to stay permanently on the turbo. The frame size is 58cm from the centre of the.....um.... (were the cranks attach to the frame  ) to the top of the seat tube.
When I stand astride the bike I have an inch of clearence. and the handlebars are 2, maybe 3 inches below the saddle when the saddle height is correct.. Does that sound like a bike that fits?
As some of you may have read I'm looking at buying a bike to replace my Dawes (which I just measured and is 52cm, so a bit small) I've been reading that guys who are 6ft tall use 58cm frames. I'm not that tall. I'm 5ft 7" maybe just pushing 5ft 8". :?
Thanks.

58cm would be far to big for me, i'm 5'10ish" , 32" inside leg and i find that 53/54cm, usually a medium a perfect fit, but thats me. You'll get other folk that use a slightly different size and they find that perfect but i doubt many would use a 58cm(i'll get ready to be shot down in flames!). You need to get measured and then you'll have a rough idea.0
