If you had £1k to build an XC bike, how would you do it?

I had a little play, using a £1k budget to see what I could get. Feel free to offer opinions, changes etc.
On One carbon frame: http://bit.ly/bU5DAD
£399
A great starting point . . .
Deore groupset, inc MT15 wheels: http://bit.ly/aD2dCs
£299
Michelin XC tyres: http://bit.ly/bMQJz9
£20 pr
Pedals, M520: http://bit.ly/9kPPib
£20
Charge Spoon saddle: http://bit.ly/9MNc6y
£22.50
FSA MaximUS BARS: http://bit.ly/bmL6YM
£15
On One 3D stem: http://bit.ly/aWFML3
£12.50
Race Face Ride seatpost: http://bit.ly/9kDfr7
£22
Superstar lock on grips: http://bit.ly/codJFx
£8
Recon Forks: http://bit.ly/9oObKn
£125
Total £945 (if my maths are correct)
This gives you a little to play with on change of stem / bars etc and for cables and any other ancillaries.
Obviously eBay, special offers and a lot more searching could bring the prices down further.

Aye, £1000's not much to custom build, but if you wanted to do that, I'd get an eBay Hasa carbon frame, saving £200, and try and get a SID and an SLX groupset.0

For a grand, I'd probably just buy a Boardman.0

+1 to On one's Whippet build, it's a better base to upgrade from as the frame is very good for XC0

This
whilst there's nothing wrong with the components you've listed i think the the whole point of custom build is to make something different/special, whether that be colours or spec to suit your riding, that you can't just buy "off the peg"FCN 9 - 2008 Kona Cinder Cone
FCN 9 - Custom Build On-One 456
FCN 5 - 2010 Boardman Team Carbon0 -
I'd build it out of used bits, that's the only way to save money on a custom build IMO. Or alternatively I'd just buy the Onone or a Boardman.Uncompromising extremist0

I built my current bike for about £900 by purchasing some used components from the classifieds and some new items from various online sales - I think its a pretty good spec for the money
from the classifieds:
2009 Cove Handjob
2009 Fox Float RLC
Mavic 719 rims on Hope pro II hubs
Avid Juicy brakes
puchased new in sales:
SLX drivetrain, rear mech and shifters
XT front mech
Easton Monkelite carbon bars
Raceface Evolve seatpost
Truvativ AKA stem
SDG Bel Air saddle
Wellgo MG1 pedals
Odi rogue grips0 -
I have often done some ofthese projected builds on here, can be fun, but you still won't beat the Boardman for the parts ;-)0
