I just replaced the continental speed king tyres that came with my cross bike with a pair of Michelin Mud 2s I've had lying around for years. What a difference; far, far superior tyres in every way, on road and off.
Highly recommended!

I've currently got Schwalbe racing ralph 35mm but have nothing to compare them to.
The rear one has a big hole and I need to replace it. Should I just buy another or can I run a different tyre on the front? I was thinking about the newer racing ralph evolution or something else? These babies aren't cheap at £35 a pop0 -

Hi scruffyduncan, interested in what you said about the Michelin Mud 2s - any views on how durable these tyres are, and levels of puncture proofness ?
I run Schwalbe Smart Sams, and so far have been impressed by them (though they're the only ones I have used so can't say anything about how they compare to other tyres!), they're good on the road and (so far) good offroad but I fear I may need something a bit more 'tready' when it get muddier.0 -
I agree about the Michelins. I hated the Speed Kings that came with my bike. Draggy but not grippy.
I now use the Michelins tubeless (My cross bike is in the "My Bikes" section) and I can use them off road at about 35psi with no trouble at all. Loads more grip, speed, cushioning, no punctures. That's definitely recommended. The conversion was really easy too, probably took 20 minutes.0 -
I got some Schwalbe CX Comps for the summer but am still waiting on the Challenge Griffos Zepnat say they sent last week...
I needed them for yesterday as the CX Comps are pretty slick in the centre with nobbly edges, and after all the rain this weekend I thought I'd be sunk (literally) with those, but actually they turned out to be brilliant - it wasnt really muddy, the grass was pretty hardpacked and there was enough path for me to benefit from a fast rolling tyre.
I cant see them being suitable for anything else this winter and I hope the damn PO deliver the Griffos soon as they were highly recommended by Zepnat and are 50% cheaper than the Mud 2's in cheap clincher form

I hope they live up to their reputation!Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -
Not much experience of any CX tyres, up until last week I was riding an MTB with CX Pro Comps on (26"), although a botched bunny hop of a kerb in the dark led to me ripping a hole in the rear tyre.
CX bike I got has Smart Sams on it, seemed to work fine yesterday, but don't really have a lot to compare them too.
I'm racing without any spares in the pits, but may take a spare set of wheels and experiment some other tyres - probably the Mud2s or the Griffos based on the recommendations on here.0
