Why the hell doesn't UEFA ban clubs from European competition when this happens?

They probably would if the English fans were the aggressors. Cynical, moi?
  • It's outside the ground & therefore of no interest to UEFA. It's the same here, anything inside the ground & the FA would fine the team, outside is for the Police. If UEFA did fine or ban teams for what goes on outside then you would see their local rivals turn up to create trouble to get the other team punished. Am very glad we played in a more civilised part of Italy.

In most circumstances I agree, but when the police arrest a fan for the crime (assuming he gets convicted of course) and he has a whole load of weapons and club paraphanlia then the rules should be changed.

    Eh?????????????

The only time English clubs were banned from Europe was after they caused the death of 39 Italian spectators.

The other countless times when club and national fans wrecked havoc wherever they went resulted in no more than the very occasional game behind closed doors.

The Italians still want revenge for the Juventus fans at Hysel.

It could be worse, they could support Liverpool. Whoops, rewind.

The local Naples news are also reporting that the violence was initiated by local Ultra thugs. It is claimed that about 10-15 were responsible for the violence. This violence has been running since the arrival of the Liverpool supporters and has included some damage to property in the city centre. Some arrests have been made that include people from the North of Italy as well as local Neapolitans.

I was initially a little suspicious of the reporting by the BBC as Naples is generally relatively safe. Any crime tends to be against property and is rarely against the person. Crime is more pick-pocketing and bag stealing than violence as such. However, football brings it own issues and I know there are some unsavoury looking people in the city on match days.

Controversial but the thought that went through my head was

It may just be me, but it always seems to be Liverpool fans that end up getting stabbed. Why?

    No malice, just curious.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

As does UEFA chief Michel Platini, who was playing for Juventus that day. Well, maybe not revenge, but I believe there's a great deal of animosity still there.

This was my thought when I read the BBC report. Johnny Foreigner beating up our innocent football supporters just did not scan with me. However, the local to Naples press seems to agree with the BBC. It will be interesting to monitor the reporting of this over the coming days. I still think that the Liverpool supporters are probably partly to blame for this one.

Gary Brown, 50, from Hertfordshire, and his son Adam, 17, received a knife injury and bruising respectively.

Mr Brown's other son Daniel, 23, was not injured but family friend Ross Hazeldene, also 23, suffered a knife wound.

A Naples police spokesman said the group had been on the way back to their hotel when they realised they were being followed.

"Realising the danger they were in, they started to run towards their hotel but the group caught up with them at the corner of Garibaldi Street and Piazza Garibaldi," he said.

"At this point they were attacked with sticks and iron bars."

  • At european and league level home fans set out to make the atmosphere intimidating for away supporters and violence/potential for it is never far away. Stick to non-league it's generally a lot more enjoyable.

I remember that all English teams were banned from European competition. I think the Italians should be at least threatened with the same penalty.

lets be honest here... UEFA hates England and English teams, they hate the fact the EPL earns the money it does.

Spanish international side monkey chants our players ..... £1000 fine

Blatter and Platini critise our clubs for their borrowing levels and then says its fantastic what Real are doing when buying Ronaldo (the "slave") for £80M

Leeds fans die in Turkey and UEFA force the team to either play or forfeit the match ..

Recent history is littered with these examples I am afraid,
  • Italian football ultras = scary stuff. A few seasons ago, Inter fans stole a moped from an Atalanta fan, smuggled it in the stadium (how?!?!), set it on fire and dropped it from an upper tier.

I went to Roma v Lazio a few years back. Tour company sat us right next to the Lazio fans (albeit behind a perspex wall). We collected quite a bit of cash that rained down on us from the Laziali when Roma scored, not to mention several bunches of keys.

At the time that was reported, there was something in an article that the Ultras control everything in 'their' part of the stadium including the staff on the turnstiles and the stewards so that's how the manage to get flares, fireworks and mopeds(!) in.

    This^^^.

The Ultras mean serious business... I wouldn't travel to watch a European away match in Italy. Especially at Lazio - I don't enjoy sharing a room with fascists.

All the same to me... they still follow The Shite and reel out YNWA every time someone says something against their precious club.

Some well reasoned discussion on here as fast as fupp and ben6899 show off the merits of education and their ability to analyse an event in a well rounded manner. "kopites are gobshites wherever they are from" could well be quoted in future university dissertations.

Am I wrong that YNWA gets overused?

Apart from that, I'm well within my rights to hold Liverpool supporters in contempt (that's my perogative) and you might actually realise I was having a go at the posters who said they'd "asked for it".
