Why would new rider, or amateur for that matter want to ride without their hands on the bar?
You're missing the point quite spectacularly

The answer is of course... TO LOOK LIKE A PRO!

Because we've reached an age where we used to be able to do it and now we can't and our children can!

  • ..glad I found this thread...echoes my thoughts exactly, always been envious of the pros with their effortless hands free gliding, eating, drinking, changing etc.....just getting into road cycling after years of distance running and trying to improve the whole balance thing with practise on the rollers, which is helping a lot. While I'm not at the hands free stage yet, I'm at least much more comfortable getting the bottle out and looking over the shoulder.
One of the more important skills I'm determined to master is the looking round thing my more experinced chums do, where they pretty much twist from the waist, taking one hand off the bars, to have a really good look behind them....practising this on the rollers is proving very interesting at the moment!!

    ??? Why?

    Pulling gloves on / off
    Zipping / unzipping tops
    Opening gel bars etc
Sitting up to give the arms & back a rest
Having a big old stretch with arms back & neck extended
Being able to ride in a relaxed manner in control of the bike.

    But mainly, because we can.

    WT...?
