i've had the offer of a carbon frame off a mate for cheap. The paint job is scratched down one side and looks a right mess but i thought a respray would be ok. Problem is i asked about a repray at a local firm and they said they couldn't do it because they cant bake the carbon again. Has anyone else heard this? Or can it be resprayed without baking it after?

Carbon frame resprays are expensive. I got quotes from Brian Rourke and Colourtech earlier this year. My plans changed so I didn't get it done in the end, but from memory they were both around £200 (not including shipping there/back).
    More problems but still living....
  • I have never heard of 'baking' a carbon frame. Stove enamelling is something done on steel frames.

Perhaps try a car body shop. However, make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for. Car paint can go on quite thick.

If you were content with a matt black finish, you might find you get surprisingly good results from a can of paint for your local DIY store.

  • Superb response to the question, djb; you clearly know what you're talking about and it's very generous of you to share that (doubtless hard-won) knowledge in such detail.

  • Just a word of warning about spraying it yourself - some paints are highly toxic - especially Imron it contains Isocyanide and is banned in some places....... If you are able to use it legally make sure you use a mask with air supply - filters will not cut it.
