Last night I punctured my Specy Armadillos All Conditions (23c) after 7,500 km of central london commuting. A flint (5 mm) got in the way.

Should I complain or this is it? (i.e. time to replace the tyres anyway, as after 7,500km they are worn out).

At first I was very upset about the puncture (I thought they were totally bombproof), but when I realised the miles I put in! I guess 7,500km (through 'dirty' London roads) is not a bad results, is it?

Comments

  • i'd say that kind of mileage is pretty good

time for a fresh set i'd say

I would write to Wiggle and complain - that is outrageous and after only 7500 k's !
 are you buzzing or what ? you have done v well to only get 1 in all those miles.. No tyre is 100% p*uncture proof... I use Schwalbe Durano Plus ( new version of Stelvio Plus ), these are better than Armadillo's or Gatorskins but you still get the odd one...

Thanks everybody for the replies, I guess 7,500km is a good mileage then and stop complaining!

I guess I've been fooled by the fact that the tyres still look pretty good, there are just a few cuts and you can still clearly see the pattern. I had to look at my bike computer to get to the total km. The side walls are a worn out and the original red colour is now a white-ish orange, but apart from that the actual tyre look (still) pretty good.

    I'll replace both straight away!

My Marathon plusses did 12,500km before getting a puncture
And TBH I think that was a "spoke through the rim tape" deflation and not a penetration

I decided to take the Armadillo off the bike and put some (almost new) 4 Season. After last night (at least) if I do get a puncture I'll be able to fix it and ride home...

The Armadillo are very solid but the ride feeling is awful (they are dead) and the grip is close to zero. Riding the Armadillo in the rain is scary.

I'll take the risk of riding 'normal' tyres but being able to fix them if it needs to...

Thanks everybody for your replies, cheeky and non.

STFU and get your wallet out you skin-flint. I say that cuz I think you're playing stupid/innocent. Which you're doing well. I thought we declared a fatwa on any more crying over split tyres?

wtfru? Do you have anything useful to add apart from these stupid comments? if you want to argue go find some other thread and mess with that.

If it's got air in then there's something out there that can puncture it, whatever the tyre. If you want truly puncture-proof tyres you need to get some solid rubber ones.

Of course some tyres are better than others but you can only reduce the chances, not eliminate them.

I personally reckon Armadillos are as near bombproof as you can get; me and a mate did some touring in Belgium a few months ago on some pretty dodgy roads and skanky towpaths - to his 3 punctures on 'normal' tyres on his borrowed Sirrus I had no problems with my Hemispheres and I was usually in front (i.e it'd be more likely for me to pick up any stray nasties) 8)

Just out of interest, has anyone ever used those solid tyres made by the company in Middlesbrough who's name escapes me? Any good?

They're not, these are punctureproof. Having tried them (a rep brought some along so we gave them a go) they're great for people who don't like bikes and hate punctures, buggies and wheelbarrows etc. horrible to ride but you'll never get a puncture!
