Hiya!
There were several positive side effects of moving from Hong Kong to Europe, one of which was the opportunity to buy new stuff in order to deal with the change in weather conditions. Out with the lightweight base layers and in with the fleece-lined bib tights!
Having finally had the chance to use some of this stuff on a little ride today it was interesting what performed well and what didn't. Here are some highlights, I'd be interested to hear if they agree with your experiences:
Ride - Maastricht to Valkenburg loop. Weather conditions - around 7 degrees, moderate breeze with occasional gusts. Rain, heavy at times, and, to my delight, hailstones on the return journey ( ) Nice!
Worked well:
1. Marks and Spencers "Cool Cotton" vest (worn as a base layer  ). - 9/10
2. Castelli Velo rainproof jacket - no water got through during the 90 minute ride - 9/10
3. Showers Pass softshell - excellent; warm and waterproof - 10/10
Not so good: Sealskinz socks. I had high hopes for these but my feet started to get wet after about 10 minutes of rain. I was wearing shorts and oddly my ankles seemed to stay dry but my feet were quite wet and cold. Very disappointing; I'd been hoping not to use shoe covers (which are like riding in wellies) but it looks like I'll be needing them.
Anyone else use them?
Steve
