OK so I pulled my Heckler out of the shed on Saturday evening to check it for a trip to Afan on Sunday - BB has seized. I hadnt ridden it since a few very muddy days in the Alps but it had been cleaned. I pulled the BB off and there is a bit of water inside the shell but the bearing/crank interface is still greased so I dont really see why its failed.

The BB Shell was faced before it was fitted, a friend suggested maybe I hadnt tightened the cups sufficiently in the shell?

Anyway - I need a new BB - old one was a simple Deore Hollowtech II - I am thinking of a XT version to replace it.

Hope BB is twice the price - is it worth it for the maintenance option?

i've just changed my old XT one after 3 years of riding. i admit i don't do anything particually extreme but it still had a decent amount of miles. I'm also going to try to strip the old one down and see if it just needs to be regreased or if its comptely gone and keep it as a spare.

I have killed two Deore BBs on two different bikes in six months. Chain reaction have got XT/SLX bottom brackets for £26 at the moment.

Cheers - XT it is I think - we shall see if it survives. I am a bit pissed it failed after 3 days in the Alps albeit that 2 days were horrifically wet and muddy - oddly I rode in worse mud in Swinley on my HT with a deore BB as well and its fine and has done way more miles. And been to the Alps for some wet days too.

XT is better than Deore, a worthwhile upgrade IMO.
