I'll soon be taking delivery of Wilier Izoard XP which will have the following component spec. Now I'm in the fortunate position to have some funds to upgrade it ( with the idea of lightening it slightly)- so, looking at the spec below what would people recomend I upgrade?

Cranks: FSA Gossamer / Wilier, 50/34T
Bottom Bracket: FSA Gossamer
Front Derailleur: Veloce 2011 10 speed
Rear Derailleur: Veloce 2011 10 speed
Shifters: Veloce 2011 10 speed
Cassette: Veloce 2011 10 speed, 11-25T
Chain: Veloce 2011 10 speed
Tyres: CST Kevlar Folding
Brakes: FSA / Wilier
Brake Levers: Veloce 2011
Handlebar: Ritchey Comp
Stem: Ritchey Comp
Saddle: Selle Italia SL
Seatpost: Ritchey Comp

  • what wheels are fitted as these would give the best upgrade! lighter in weight also means easier to spin up.

Expect the wheels are Fulcrum 5/7's so perhaps you could upgrade to a pair of Fulcrum Zero's/Ones? Or Campy Zonda/Neutron/Shamals? Or Mavic Ksyrium SL's? You could either keep the supplied pair as training wheels or perhaps the dealer would take them as PX? High end Italian tyres would complete the picture, perhaps Vittoria Diamante Pro's or Open Corsa Cx's?

The Gossomer is both heavy and the paint chips off easily so I'd try and again PX that for an FSA SLK or Campy Centeur Carbon/Chorus or even Record if you've plenty of cash?

As the drivechain components wear out you could move up towards Chorus/Record as. Or if you really have a hole in your pocket ask for a quote for the dealer to swap the lot for such before delivery!

    Have fun

  • That word 'upgrade' sucks. Straight from the lips of marketing men.

Instead, spend your money on some first rate cycling clothing and some good quality shoes. Having these can add to the cycling experience.

I swapped a Gossamer for an Ultegra 6700 to match the rest of the groupset on my bike. The weight saving? A paltry 70 grams, not really worth it. The Gossamer weighs 785g plus 100g for the BB according to my scales.

The spec of that Wilier looks pretty good all round, if I was the OP I'd ride it as it is and see how I got on.

just change the bits you don't like!

spend the money on stuff you like.

Wheels are the big gain, as said. Beyond that..... not a lot in things.

Thats cos you "upgraded" to ultegra - which isn't really an upgrade at all - I was thinking something like this as a minimum:

or this if the OP is feeling flush:

I'm assuming that Merlin, CRC, Wiggle are the main places to go to still for purchasing road components. Are there any other places I should be made aware of?

and ribble cycles too - wiggle are great but never (or at least, rarely) the cheapest. Ribble have a bad rep for being slow and poor to respond but I have never had an issue with them.
