    Try reset the modem itself

From what I understand, the modem is built into the set top box, so by turning this off it should reset the modem. Will leave it off for a few mins, if that doesn't work then I will have to give them a ring tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help everyone, but it looks like its a problem with my service. Tried everything that I can physically do myself, and it is still just doing exactly the same. Heard a lot of bad things about virgin recently, I had them all last year and had no problems so I must have got lucky that time, but now I can understand why everyone always complains!

Is anyone actually reading this thread?

We have established that it is cable and that the router is connected to the TV set top box so the modem may be in the TV set top box or the router itself. There will be no microfilters due to no ADSL and that it is not the actual computers that are at fault.

Hope that helps put us all on the same page

Calm down dear. The bit about the TV emerged between reading the thread and posting a response.

I am pleased to be reporting form my laptop! Not sure if anything I did actually helped the situation, but it just started working again so seems like it must have been a fault with the providers.

Thanks for all the help again, the Crudcatcher can be useful sometimes ;)
  • Got a neighbour with virgin, not sure how similar your probs are but customer services telt her that her set top box will no longer support her current internet package. She's been waiting for a geezer to turn up for about a week now.

Literally only had ours installed for just over a month, so if they turn around and tell us we need something else then they are a bunch of bellends! :)
  • internet through set top box only supports up to 10mb. When I worked for em I remember them saying if we had anyone connecting like this (and there were very few) to offer them seperate modems (as basically it's easier to try and get people to upgrade to 20/50mb).

They have 5 call centres for tech support. 2 of em are in the UK but the 3 Indian ones are massive

By the sounds of it there must be a separate modem. Or its built in to the router. It appears vm are now doing them.

If it was the set top box's on board modem then it would be cat5 used between it and the router.

We have up to 10mb, so it does seem like the modem is built into the set top box. We have one of the new Virgin HD set top box's, which is different to what we had last year when we had a separate modem, so the set top box's with the built in modems must be a new addition (as we also had up to 10mb last year).

Was doing the same thing again today! Really getting on my nerves now, had to come into uni just to print off some parcel labels for bike stuffs im sending out! If it is not working when I get home later, Virgin will be getting a very nagry phone call!

Fingers crossed for one of the english call centres ;)

The combined set top box and modem for virgin/NTL have been dodgy forever. They've never managed to get them right.

If you call in the day, you have a better chance of getting a UK call centre.

One of my house mates just rung up now, think she got through to a UK call centre which was lucky! Had to change some settings on the router set up thing (you know when you enter the ip into the browser and put the admin and password thingy in) and seems to be working fine now, not really sure what the problem was!
