Best pads for old school 40mm caliper brakes?

The pads I have now seem a bit rubbish, probably due to age. I've bought some bog standard replacements for £4.50 for 4. Not put these on the bike yet so no idea how good they are, but wondered if the older small pad brakes had a "market leader" or something that produced top quality pads?
