What length should my chain be?

I've just changed my 105 chainset from a double to a compact. I have a new chain and 10 speed cassette however I am not sure what length the chain needs to be?
Usually I measure the new against the old but would this be ok given the chain rings are now smaller?
Is there a standard way of measuring the length regardless of the chainset/gears?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks

This explains it better than I could:

I would look at the largest cog to largest chainring method.0 -
