  • halfords did a buy one get one free on their £2.99 bottles.

only problem was that they can be a bit brittle when cold; i dropped one and it shattered last winter.
    you cant squeeze them either.

    :/

Make sure you don't break your chain

Bolox. Only go black if you don't clean them. Cheap boots sterilising tablets or plain old soapy water is fine.

What are you putting in them? Just rinse with hot water after each ride and they should be fine.

Or get a bottle brush or even a small washing up brush to scrub them.

Top tip - don't get cheap ones. I recommend the lockable Camelback ones, which can go in the dishwasher. You're not washing yours soon enough or properly.

+1 Dishwasher mine after each ride and never seen any nastiness. The one in my gym bag almost never gets cleaned and there's no sign of blackness in there! :?
  • Stopped buying water bottles. I would rather stop at a shop for a drink. And they all sell bottles of water these days, not like 20 years ago.

Why buy something that comes out of a tap for nothing?

As AggieB said...Buy some CamBak Podium bottles, best by far.

I clean mine using a small amount of Milton Fluid and cold water.
Its not a bad idea to Boil them for a few minutes in a big saucepan now and again either. That will kill the crap in um.

I expect putting a small amount of water in them and microwaving them might work

err... rinse it till there's no soap left then...

We sometimes forget to wash out our bottles but the suggestions of bunging them in the dishwasher , and every now and then soaking them in Milton fluid do the trick. Milton is tastless.

    CamelBak Podiums for me.
As sub55 says, keep bottles, or camelbak bladders in the freezer, too.
I only drink water, so bottles are easier to maintain...

  • Milton may be tasteless but its still a type of bleach....I don't think I'd like to drink bleach on a regular basis.....
  • Stop filling your bottles with Kahlua!!

If you wash them after youve finished riding - they'll last for years. I've got some that must be a decade old. Simples.

+4 - they are ace! - 9.99 (last time I got them) each but they last ages - completely tasteless and easy to clean - can be dishwashered (although they don't fit on top shelf in my dishwasher) they are also leakproof and have a good flow from a well designed drink nozzle.

er...then why is it recommended for sterilising babies' bottles etc etc? Your call of course, but would rather not be drinking gribleys and wotnots.

I always buy Science in Sport bottles, dead cheap at £3 each and they have a screw on top which I prefer. Plus a softer rubber mouth piece which is a nice touch.

+1, I wash mine each time including a good squirt of clean water through the spout and it keeps them fine.

    Camelback Podium,

Wash in soapy water. Rinse. Add a little water, screw on top, squirt. Empty.
Fill with chosen rehydration fluid. Sorted.

2 years. No problems. No bad taste.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Fill them with alcohol. Using a product with a high alcohol content (i.e 70%) will kill 99.9% of the bacteria present after a 5 minute contact time and a decent scrub with a sponge or washing up brush will do for the other 0.1%.
If you buy it, they will come...

...up to you and say, you didn't want to buy one of them!!!

+1 with the microwave, noticed black marks on my Foska bottle today, small amount of water plus a few moments in the m'wave. Job done.

Whaa? You mean you don't feel the need to upgrade every season/month?!

Being a MAMIL poseur I was delighted to find a nice aluminium one with gloss White finish to match my frame in Halfords - shame is the nozzle is totally shite  I just got one with my hire bike out here in Lanzarote all logo'd up, so that'll be in the cage for a few weeks when I get home 8) yes, sad I know

What about one of the ones that unscrews at top and bottom. Easier to wash apparently, don't use one myself because a normal bottle comes clean with one rinse after every ride.

    Do you drink bitumen residue?

Only know about these new fangled bottles because the guys on the tour commentary couldn't stop themselves from mentioning them about 100 times a minute during this years race.

Top tip - hang around the side of the road on a pro race especially around the feed station and you'll get enough bottles free of charge to last you years
