I currently have a tiagra specced Giant as a winter bike, and could do with some advice on how best to upgrade the brakes, using the exisitng calipers.

I would appreciate a guide on what pads will work with a tiagra caliper.

Thanks.......

Shimano fit swissstop green will do the job nicely. I've heard good things about koolstop as well but not seen a direct comparison.

Koolstop Salmon pads will do the trick - very good in winter conditions. They don't pick up tiny bits of aluminium from the rims either which all the Shimano pads are prone to doing.

I think the tiagra pads are 1-piece shoe+pad, so you will need shoes for the new pads too.

I really like the dual-compound black/salmon koolstop pads too, they are a bit "sharper" feeling in the dry as the black compound is harder.

  • Yes, a world of difference if you fit new brake blocks. They make you go on average 5kph faster and reduce punctures and improve your climbing ability.
