Single speed wheels

I'm looking for some wheels for my latest single speed project. The dilema I have is that proper single speed/fixie wheels are quite heavy when you compare them with similar priced 9/10 speed wheels. On a previous bike I have used RS10's with a ss conversion without any problems, I can pick these up in a sale for about £79 and they are lighter than £100+ ss wheels.

What is the benifit of having proper single speed wheels that are heavier?

Thanks

Think a lot of single speed wheels are more fashion over function.
I had the same dilemma, and built my own wheels with Mavic CXP33 rims I had lying around

I think a nice single speed conversion on a rear hub (like the velosolo kits) looks great. I have heard things about axle wind or something like that and assumed that proper ss wheels may have stronger spokes to stop it.

The advantage of a dedicated hub is the bigger hub flange distance and diameter which builds into a stiffer wheel. Cheaper wheels may use straight-gauge spokes but they're not any stronger as you need the strength at the ends, not the middle. Reducing wind-up is helped by bigger hub flanges too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Cheers Monty Dog, wind up is what I was thinking of. So if I go for dedicated ss wheels I need to look for hubs with a big flange which also look very nice.

These are not too far from you - and can probably make up what you need.

Cheers Blackhands, never heard of them before but looks like a great shop, never thought of custom built before, will have to give them a call.

Pikepikle - She won't find out lol.

Much less "dishing" on a single speed wheel rather than a conversion too?

They are not open all the time so check - I got a fixed wheel frame from them - excellent value.

Had a look at that, under £200 looks like a bargain.
