Kaffenback Campag conundrum.

I'm two clicks away from getting this.....
http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/FRP ... back-frame
as a winter training/commuting bike, to save my shiny Planet X Ti Sportive
with mavic Cosmic Carbones from the impending salt-fest that is a Welsh winter..
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/weath ... itain.html

Going to cobble it together with leftovers from my parts bin and one or two new bits,
but debating whether to build an 8-speed back wheel from an old STX hub and new rim
or will an 8-speed retro Campag cassette fit on my old Veloce-hubbed CXP-22 back wheel?

I plan to run an old XT thumbshifter, as I don't really want to shell out for another 10 speed shifter/brake combo, was also hoping to pick up something like these for brakes.....
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEDWX:IT
then finish things off with a single ring up front (42 or 44) a brown saddle, honey bar tape and gumwall tyres for good measure!

So back to query....will an old (vintage?) 8-speed Campag cassette go straight on my Veloce 10 speed hub or will I need spacers or am I better off using the old STX and building another wheel?
If Wales was flattened out, it'd be bigger than England!

I'm afraid your 8 speed cassette won't fit your Veloce hub as it's 9/10 speed, but you can get a spacer kit that allows you to convert a 9 speed cassette i.e. drop the big sprocket and fit wider spacers.

Actually you can get a campag 8sp cassette on a 9/10 hub. It's not pretty, in that the splines don't mate exactly and you risk chewing up the freehub, but it's not an impossibility like fitting a 9 or 10 speed cassette on a 8sp hub.

Officially, yes, but they have a hidden 8th click. I've used Deore thumbies on an 8 speed MTB without problems. As the spacing of 8 speed Shimano and Campag cassettes is the same, it should all work!

OK - got it rolling, but only as a singlespeed for the time being......
Old Shimano RX100 triple (using middle 40T with a 18T on the back)
    Shimano V-brakes
    Charge Ti spoon saddle
    Brown Fizik bar tape
    Conti Gatorskin 25's
    Ritchey Headset, Bar and Stem
    Dia-Compe levers (old-skool/non-aero)
    Prob £375, all-in.
Very happy with the way it rides and once I get the gearing sorted
it can be used as my winter trainer/pub bike/hack/commuter/occasional tourer.

    First time I've seen that pic - god I'm a lanky tw@t!
Bike is comfy, though, despite the metre or so of seatpost

pseudo-retro.........I like the sound of that.
Does that make me a pseudo-retro grouch?
I need gears, though, the singlespeed novelty is wearing
off already - there are two, 100m sections of 10% hill
in the final mile of my commute home and I don't like my
neighbours seeing me pushing my bike up hills

I have a fondness for Kaffenbacks - I had an original and based my custom Xi'an titanium on one, sorting out the original version's clearance problem and adding disc brakes - now resolved on curent models. I've been running the Xi'an lately as a fixed and waiting an Forward EBB to convert is to SS cross - so when the chance of a Pompino came up recently, I had to have it.
