I know there are literally hundreds out there, but my favourite has to be Junior Walker's solo in Foreigner's 'Urgent'

I had a Selmer mk VI tenor and it was fantastic (got stolen :-( ) but my replacement Conn 16M I also really like, I had a go on a nickel plated Keilwerth SX90R adn that was a beast, very capable but definitely a modern sounding horn
ah right, solos ? so many to choose from (Good shout with Love Supreme Plankton)
Ko Ko by Charlie Parker
Y Yo la Quiero by Joe Henderson (from the trio at the village vanguard album)
Wessex by Julian Arguelles (not just the sax, the entire piece of music is fabulous)
for pop stuff, I love your smile by shanice (cheesey song but the sax solo by Branford Marsalis is exquisite)
the solo on Respect by Aretha Franklin - try playing it
Soul Power by Maceo"I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"

I'm not always a huge fan of the saxophone, but the sax part in Long As I Can See the Light by Creedence gets me everytime.Look out kid, they keep it all hid0

Chris Wood of Traffic.
Bobby Keys with the Rolling Stones.
Lee ‘Kix’ Thompson of Madness
I'll probably think of a few more to disprove myself this afternoon...0 -
Perhaps someone in this thread could inform me - did some kind of Mass Extinction Event hit saxophonists in the mid to late 80s? If not, what are all the unemployed ones doing? Not that I'm complaining, (see ChrisNoir above), but I've long wondered about the sudden and total disappearance of the sax from popular music0

Some dude in the film "The Lost Boys", although i'm just saying that coz i watched it last night.0

Kenny G...is he any good? Long permed mane billowing in the wind as he honks away on a clifftop.. Bit o' class.
Seriously, the only bands that have pulled of the sax thing are Roxy Music, Cardiacs & The Blockheads. Most of the time I hear it I cringe a bit.0 -

+100 I was just about to sign up to the I Hate Sax brigade until this post. Cardiacs need a thread all of their own. Possibly my fave band of all time.0 -
Your Latest Trick - Dire Straits0

The saxophone solo was jailed for life for aiding and abetting crimes against the ears in the 1980s. The saxophone solo's accomplice, the brass section, was found not guilty, thanks to witness testimonies from ska bands and Ian Dury. It makes the odd re-appearance with groups like Rocket From The Crypt in rock music, and occasionally retro soul numbers, but in general keeps a low profile.0 -
The problem is that most sax solos are tenor sax but as with everything a baritone sounds better than a tenor.
Can we add Spandau Ballet - Gold to the list0 -

Tommy Smith, Jan Garbarek ....Surprised that the voyeurs here have not posted a picture of Candy Dulfer. Played with some well known pop dudes as well as her own jazz band.
Anyone mentioned Lee Thompson of Madness?0 -
baritone solo - Greenbacks by Ray Charles, immense
I met Candy's Dad, Hans Dulfer, he plays sax as well, better than Candy... although you'd rather look at candy. he plays jump jazz style stuff all at riotous tempos"I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"

Pop:
Echo Beach - Martha & The Muffins
Rhythm Stick - Blockheads

Anything by Charlie Parker or Cannonball Adderley (Work Song my fave)0 -
Slightly leftfield suggestion but...
Mysteriality by OMD
And not really a sax solo but the brass section on Mark Ronson's version of Radiohead's "Just" is abot the only record that will get me to "air sax".0 -

You sort of answered your own question there, they all went back to playing music other than pop.
PPPeople that make generalisations are all morons.

I've got an Alto - haven't played ot for a while tho - trouble with mainstream sax is it's always a bit cheesy.

My poor old Dad will be spinning in his grave, a pro sax player for many years playing with the likes of Jack Bruce and Jonnie Mathis.
Whatever happened to
Lester Young
Stan Getz
Charlie Parker
Brandon Marsalis
John Coltrane
Dexter Gordon
Colman Hawkins
That solo in 'Urgent' could be played by any grade 7 player with a couple of days practiceNorfolk, who nicked all the hills?
