Hi everyone

i'm new to the mountain bike section being a roadie!

I've got a budget of £600 for a bike each for myself and the Mrs and would like some advice on what bike to go for.

I'm thinking hard tail as we're not going to be doing anything too off the beaten track just pathways and easy trails hence the price tag.

I was actually thinking of going second hand and not bothering with suspension for myself and go for new with front end suspension for the misses.

Any thoughts????

I know it's a cheap budget but I've gone and treated myself to a new road bike so limited funds. Hence why I might go for a cheap 2nd hand bike and get her a new one!!

    Hi bigrider
have just got myself a Btwin rockrider 5.3 from Decathlon for £299 which I thought was a real bargain.Like yourself I mainly ride on roads or to work but as a friend rides in a couple of country parks I thought it would be good to join him,I would easily recomend btwins as the bike I got was very close on spec and weight to a Cannondale and Cube at around twice this price I looked at and feels just as good to ride, has front suspension & sram gears and reasonable hutchinson tyres which feel good on the paths we ride.

Used is certainly the way to go. I've had barely ridden bikes for a fraction of the new price, folk buy them with good intentions and never use them. I know a guy who spent 1000 on the C2W scheme months ago and has yet to ride his bike, a future bargain for someone else.

The Rockriders are just about unbatable for the cash and would be my first port of call.

Trying to break out of the asylum and onto the muddy tracks in Swansea.
  • Go for second hand, you'll get much more for your money. Just take your time in finding a bargain.

Or spend £500 on a bike for yourself and a £100 on one for the wife - you know it makes sense!
