Who knows about telescopes?

It's the Father-in-Law's 60th next year and his offspring want to get him a telescope, looking to spend about £150-200.

Can anyone recommend any good ones?

Cheers

*Supersonic to the forum*... (he knows more than I about 'scopes)

£150-£200 is pretty much at the bottom of the scale for 'scopes.

What sort of objects will he be looking at?

Just bumping this - I'm interested in scopes too at the moment.
For what it's worth, my local photography shop has recommended one of these, says it's a fantastic scope, and can't be beaten for the money (£200)

For £200 the above will be really hard to beat for general astro duties.

Forget these scopes that advertise massive magnifications as they cannot deliver - light gathering capabilty is key, and a good sized aperture (at least 4 inches) is a good start. Reflectors at this price are usually the way forward as they are well priced, fairly compact and have good light gathering. Dobsonians are a variation and are even simpler to set up and use.

    This is what I use:

Though branded slightly differently. Does a good job.
