I seem to have overtightened my seatpost collar and cracked my carbon seatpost, i.e, slithers of carbon coming away. Will this be of major detriment to the overall strenght of seatpost? I think the actual core is aluminium, it's a bontrager, wish I'd had a torque wrench....doh! Advice welcome

    Dont need torque wrench...
    just use hairspray.
As to a seat post fail at some point.. you'll have to be the judge of that.
If I knacked up mine it would be an expensive replacement as I would have to go for a FSA K force carbon one to keep the bling up.

The structural integrity has been compromised. :?

What will you sit on if it breaks during a ride? :?:

    How will that feel?

You know what to do! :)

Planet-X had an FSA carbon seat post reduced to £15 in their recent sale - could be worth looking to see if they still have one.

helps it grip so less tightening is needed.

    Negative.

I bought this one and after a couple of rides noticed it spun whilst sitting on the bike. Initially thought it was maybe loose but realised where it meets the top seatpost section to clamp it actually turns from carbon to another material.

Sent it back and the guys from planet-x rang me saying lots had been back for the same reason. They advised I got a refund.

Cheap post for a reason, next time going to get an all carbon one to eliminate this potential flaw.
  • If the carbon is wrapped around an alloy tube, then there is less to worry about ... possibly nothing to worry about.
  • +1 for hairspray

I tried this after becoming really annoyed with my carbon seatpost slipping an inch during each ride.

I read on forums that an expensive paste for carbon would work or hairspray. I never had any paste but the wife had hairspray.

I gave the seatpost a good spray about 2 months ago and it hasn't budged since.
  • Thank you for all the advice, have started looking for a new seatpost  What are your excperiences getting legitimate (not copies) products off ebay? The big question, which seatpost? Ritchey/Easton/FSA/Campagnola/Bontrager/3T Dorico

If you use hairspray to help the seatpost stick in place isn't there a risk of it becoming jammed in the frame?

If it's just the carbon weave isn't that only cosmetic anyway?
