You are doing the right thing in going back to the police. The incident sounds more like an assault than anything else.
Some people see cyclists as fair game and their life and health as having no significance.

What was it? Sect 59 the one where they use their vehicle for anti social stuff? That could play a part too.

With regards to people quoting the highway code riding 2 abreast etc

IIRC isn't the highway code just that that.....a code of conduct that incorperates some elements of law within it. I think there are terms within it of 'should' and' must' with must being the legal items. Ie you must not drive dangerously and you should ride single file on narrow roads.
Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals! Except the weasel

True, and lets not forget that is says you should consider wearing high vis, reflectives and a helmet. Contentious is a word I might use, I wonder how many of those telling the OP he should have kowtow'd would be wearing those to the letter of the HC. :?

There are times when we really should do more to stick up for others.

Lets face up to it, in this country the only time a cyclist will get any respect is when they pop onto the top of a podium at the Olympics.

All we can do is be as safe as we can. If we try and report every attempt to knock us off we'd never get to ride at all.

Utter tosh. If by "respect" you mean driving safely and properly around cyclists - 99.9% of motorists do. But unfortunately you always end up with "fools" and they are the ones that make life dificult for cyclists. Also, there are plenty of "foolish" cyclists.
The OP has plenty to moan about, but changing it into a moan about all motorists is disproportionate.

No I don't mean just driving safely and properly, I'm talking about the regrading of cyclists into a subspecies by the likes of Clarkson. To be ridiculed and attacked as gay/dangerous/mad/eco tree hugging, lycra louts who will run over a pedestrian for a laugh. Yes there are idiots on two wheels but you don't see the media running down car drivers in the same way. In fact you are more likely to see headlines bemoaning the harrassed motorists lot.
  • Been cycling for only a few months and I'm fed up of these nasty drivers! I've had quite a few near misses and my friend was nearly knocked off her bike (deliberately) by some young lads who thought they were being funny. We always ride single file which is proving quite dangerous as cars 'squeeze' past us at high speeds.

My wish is that anyone getting problems out there should fill in some stopSMIDSY forms to add to the CTC camplaign (you can link to youtube vids too if it helps). The people adding data the better the picture will be as to a) what its like in certain areas, and b) if that picture is changing

I dont think theres any reason we (or any other road users) should be putting up with aggression or imcompetence.

Sounds like the OP was doing the right thing.

It was unsafe in their pion for the driver to overtake and going by the actions of the car driver they were correct.

Pursue the Police as much as you can.

Sadly not all of them are as good in their job as yourself.

In ALL my experiences of the 3 emergency services here in London the Police have been as much use a chocolate fireguard. Closely followed by the London Ambulance Service i'm afraid to say :(

Fire brigade have always been on top form 8) (just don't get me started on the coming strikes though)
