im preparing my winter bike and trying to save money by doing it myself (god knows what will happen )
my bottom bracket needs replacing as it makes an unhealthy noise (like something crunching/grinding) when you're on the bike.
i have found the correct BB i need to buy, but how do i fit it? do i need a special tool? how easy/difficult is it?
thanks

its a square taper BB.
have managed to get a shimano UN54 correct size BB brand new for £6 off ebay, so just need to figure out how to put it on now.0 -
you'll need a crank puller
something like this:
http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/107132.html
or this
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/kf/crank-extracting-tool-ec007667
and a BB tool
something like
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/ice-toolz/isis-shimano-bottom-bracket-tool-ec018385
If the bottom bracket you are taking out is different to the one you are putting in, you may need a different BB tool to get the old one out0 -
thanks for that, will double check the old one and then see what i can do.0

You mean to tell me there ain't somewhere on the internet that shows you how to do that?0

whats with the sarcastic comment?? time of the month for you??
i would much rather ask a question on bike maintenance on a dedicated site like this rather than trust some of the internet sites out there.
luckily there are some people who are kind enough to help, unlike morons who make sarcastic comments.0 -
Plenty of video tutorials over at www.bicycletutor.com - have fun!0

The BB tool will have a hole through it, this is so that you can bolt it to the spindle. You've little chance of removing it without doing this. Also, on the free cup side (non-drive side) you have to progressively loosen this bolt as the cup unscrews.0

+1 on the tip above about bolting the tool to the spindle so it does not slip. A long spanner/socket wrench helps with leverage too.
As long as nothing is seized it's an easy job. Make sure the bottom bracket threads are clean and greased before screwing the new bb in very carefully by hand to start with making sure not to cross-thread it. Also screw the crank puller fully into the crank before using it.
This is what I use, 32mm spanner, shimano bb tool, 8mm hex wrench, Park crank puller, and washer to help bolt tool to spindle.

The instructions on the parktool website, http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-hel ... m-brackets are pretty good. In fact parktool is pretty much a "trusted source" as far as I'm concerned
When I first replaced a bottom bracket of this type - I bought a cheap toolkit from
