Well I am utterly PISSSED OFF! Spent about an hour clearing shit out of the computer, unused progs etc etc. Seemed device manager wasn't working because auto updates were off. So turned it on and it wanted me to reboot. Rebooted, and no internet. Nada. Would not recognise the wireless dongle. And device manager still didn't work! Had to roll back and undo al the work! Bastard!

If I was in a similar situation

    1) Buy an external hard drive for backups

    2) Backup up all of the useful stuff

    3) Add more RAM (crucial.com/uk)

    4) Format hard disc and reinstall OS from scratch

    5) Copy useful stuff back from external hard drive

    6) Drink a beer

    tottally agree with Ghill.

Its amazing what a complete new re-install does for your computers performance. If you don't need anything fancy and just want to inject some new life in your current machine this is a very cost effective way to do it.
