I'm currently in Bolton on business, staying right on the Northern edge of the town (Bromley Cross, I think).

I got here last night to see the beautiful moors, barely a breath of wind, clear blue sky, and sunshine. I woke this morning to pretty much the same (although it was 2.5C brrrrr !!!).

The problem ?

The weather forecast on Monday night was pretty grim, so I didn't bring my bike. All I can do is look out onto the hills and dream !!!

Still, I should be back in about 6 weeks, can anyone recommend any good routes ? It looks like it could beinteresting if I head out towards Turton and Entwistle Reservoir or Wayoh Reservoir. Any toughts ?

Oooohhh, you are so spoilt for choice. As long as you don't just plough up the A666 you're good to go in any northern direction.

Head west to capture Rivington first and then loop north across the moors before heading back down into Bolton from the north would be my suggestion but you can't go far wrong with other options north of Bolton.

I'll try to put something up later but there's a few Bolton lads and lassed know your starting point better than me.

Ya daft 'a'porth! The ToB showed how good the cycling round there is, even when the weather's not good.

Loads to choose from up there. Just get a map (paper or digital) and head off...

tbh anywhere heading out of the town is great, rinvington, belmont, turton etc

Bolton home of hills get some training in. You could head to southport via parbold hill (cant miss that out especially on the way back) that should keep you occupied for a couple of hours. But seriously what morstar said or pm bunneh and ask him for his 20 miler which takes in Bury, Ramsbottom then back into Bolton and you can include The Rake.

Anywhere round the W.lancs Moors really. Out of Bolton over Belmont or towards Blackburn. Over to Rivington back thro'Chapeltown,Edgworth etc. Some stunning riding around these areas. Not easy but not overhard (depending owmuch effort you put in!)

I'm from Bromley Cross! You staying at Last Drop?

Not really sure of any moors riding but you could drive/ride to rivington and theres a good loop there including the volunteer built Healy Nab.

A ride I've done in the past is to park at Rivington upper barn, ride up to the Pike and down the other side to Winter Hill. From the Pike you can take an boggy path up to the winter hill summit or follow the road down away from the pike until you see the winter hill service road on the left.

After the killer descent down from winter hill you'll hit the road. Go left to Belmont then turn right at the Black Dog pub and this road takes you back over the top and drops you back into Rivington.

Alternatively you are only 30 mins away from the fantastic Lee and Cragg quarries. This is where you will find the best off road riding in the area by far!

P.s. if anyone does know any killer off-road loops starting from Bromley Cross then let me know!!

Apologies - just realised this post was in the Road section! Sorry if the info is completely useless!

I went for a quick drive last night (another beautiful evening !!) and there looks to be some great riding.
Thanks for the pointers folks, I certainly won't be leaving the bike at home next time I'm up here.

Yep, I was staying at the Last Drop.

No worries about the off road comments, I mountain bike as well (shhhh... don't tell the others !!) so off road loops are always good to know, but you're right, I was after road loop information.

    cheers........ Matt

If you can get to Clitheroe, yuo've got Pendle Hill one side, Bowland the other, and the trip across to the Dales out to the North East. Best.
