    Louthepoo, you do know that helmets work by absorbing the energy of an impact that would otherwise crack your skull.
    Some of this energy was used up in breaking bits off of your helmet. Next time there will be no bits to break off so it will be used up in cracking your skull.

    On the other point, most plastics are affected by UV light and heat, so frequent replacement is probably well advised.
