Following on from the footage on the London cyclists thread and something I've been thinking of getting can someone recommend a decent quality but reasonably cheap helmet cam? As I'm trying to commute quite regularly now I'd like to have some sort of evidence if the worst does happen rather than being in a 'my word against his' argument. I also fancy recording some of my proposed charity ride next summer.

well - ive not got one, but like you i'm thinking about one too

A couple of years ago THE standard was the oregon ATC2K - it was the camera to have - it has since been replaced by the ATC3K and then the ATC5K - which wiggle have for sale at the moment - it;s £161 though!

a quick search shows that the ATC2K is still available - Amazon have it at under £35 so I think I will be getting one of those to try it out and see how I get on![/code]

Thanks, I'll have a look at it. Must try to remember not to leave my hat hanging in the women's changing rooms when I get one
  • I've got one of these kits for sale if you're interested:

They're pretty good quality and have good battery life.

A fortnight ago an Amazon seller were doing the ContourHD 1080 for £170, approx half price.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I have got one of these - quality is not great but for £30 you can see whats what

mounts on your handle bar, I have got some footage from the alps which I'll up to youtube today so you can see what its like.

it records as big as the SD card you put in, 2GB does an hour.

That's a good deal. I paid £100 more for mine. The quality of the footage is fantastic. Probably a bit of overkill if you just want to record your commute though, especially as you need a high spec pc to edit any of it.

this is from my cheapy action cam in the alps this year, its on an angle becuase I am an idiot but it gives you an idea of the quality - its not HD by any means but its ok for what you pay, and it doesnt need any additional wires - its built in just like a normal front light really.

Thanks all. Neil - you should have said you deliberately filmed it at a jaunty angle as an homage to French art films

Pross - did you get sorted at all, have you ordered one?

That one in play.com looks pretty good for the money - I am now trying to decide between it or the ATC2K
  • Decathlon have this:

    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/x-snipe-300-28333551/ at £70 (they also do http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/sport-video-camera-dv15-137661510/ at £45).

No idea what they are like.
There's no such thing as too old.
  • Plenty of YouTube stuff for the x-snipe 300 - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHuYY4Oq7d0&feature=fvw

The ContourHD one is very interesting ... a link to some footage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_370842&feature=iv&v=pttRzOCJaSE&fmt=22

The Amazon price seems to back towards £200 not bad for full HD camera (in my opinion)

Yeah I got one for £165.16. You do need a PC/laptop with at least a 2.8GHz or more dual core Pentium 4 processor and 3GB of memory, at least a 3GHz processor if editing full 1080 HD footage. But the Amazon deal was good. Motons clearly see the camera sitting on top of your helmet whether the camera is actually filming or not and are more courteous.

Have a look online for ATK2 for more info on this camera as it looks like a rebadged model.
(they also do http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/sport-video-camera-dv15-137661510/ at £45).

No idea what they are like.

This looks like a £15 ebay special, if the camera is the same as the ebay special then the camera records in 5 mins slips then restarts with the camera missing approx 2-3 seconds of action when saving the previous clip and restarting the new one.

I work for Decathlon in Stockport.
Whe nthis camera was first released by Decathlon I used one to try and give feedback.
I did a winter ride in the Peaks and was very impressed for the money.
Picture quality was at 30fps and the quality was good.
I did suffer with vibration bit it was attached to my handlebars rather than my helmet.I suspect this is a common issue wit hall cameras mounted on the bars.
It does take an SD memory card to increase capacity as well.
