Brake pads - general.

Do disc brake pads pick up and retain bits of grit etc like rim brake pads do?
I imagine the compound is much harder than rim brake pads but the reason I ask is this:
Last Saturday I had a particularly mucky day out and from time to time the front brake was making the usual horrific sounds of a grit sandwich. The disc shows signs of light scoring which is normal and expected under such conditions, but I wonder if it's usual or necessary to remove the pads for inspection as part of the cleanup routine. I didn't notice any noise riding back to the car park.

Be nice to all cyclists - you may want to borrow a pump one day :-)

a wash with water tends to help."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

OK nicklouse
I decided to have a look anyway as the bike was upside down with the wheel out and it seemed like a good idea to get used to removing/replacing the pads (first time for me).
There was nothing amiss although quite a build-up of kak etc. I reckon directing the hose pipe close to and directly in and around the calipers should do the trick unless any noise persists.
Always something new to learn eh!
