Giant Terrago re-gearing

Hi All,
I have an '08 Terrago Disc (http://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bi ... tions_id=3), which has a Shimano M443 22/32/44 chainring set, and I am after some advice on getting a larger outer ring. I found on the Shimano website (http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 647958.pdf) that the M443 rings might be compatible with the M540 rings, can anyone verify this?
I was thinking of changing the outer to a 48T... is this a good idea or won't it work...
Advice welcomed...
The reason for the change is that I have got access to a spare set of wheels that I want to setup for road use, and would like a to increase the gearing.
Thanks in advance.
Kevin

The step to the middle ring will exceed your mechs limits ie a 16t gap. May shift badly.0
-
11t rear will help if you're not currently running one instead.0
-
Thanks for the replies. I am already running a 34 - 11 cluster at the back.
As I mostly use the middle ring (and sometimes my inner one when gravity sucks too hard  ) for my MTB riding, and only use the out for road-work between trails, how bad would the shifting be?
Inconvenient, or untennable?0 -
Thing is you will have to move the mech upward on the seat tube to get the required 2mm. It may not be the changes to the big cog that are affected, you may now run into problems in the granny and middle as the mech is made for a max gap and may rub on the extremes of cassette.0
-
right, I get it... It may be a case of trial and error to find a front derailler that would accommodate the bigger outer then?0
-
They don't exist :-(. You could give it a go, some seem to work better then others, but as above, the rest of the shifting can go to pot as the mech is too high for certain shifts.
My advice would be to get a 48/38/28 chainset, and mech with a 48t max outer. The 10 tooth gaps will be fine.0 -
Would this work then? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shima ... e=googleps0

That will work a treat and be much stiffer than your current setup.
£11 more than the 22/32/44 one on Merlin though.
Might need to and recommend that you get you frame BB shell faced at a cost of ~£15 too - that's an LBS job - if they don't know what you're talking about - go somewhere else.0 -
If they had them in stock.
CRC do and cheaper. And free postage.

I have 22/32/44 already... :? Looking ofr higher gearing... The wiggle link is not the best price I have found btw... just a nice example of what I am looking at... e.g. http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... t_1356.htm
Why the recomendation for a shell face BB? I have the BB replaced about 8 months ago...0 -
It's a totally different system - the Deore is HTII - external bearings (outside of the BB shell).
THis means you move the stiffness more into the frame and can use bigger bearings.0 -
Would this set bolt straight on (Shimano FC M151), allowing for a new front derailleur?0

If you read the thread, you'll see I currentl have a Shimano FC-M443, and that utilises the square ended BB axle, making the newer Octalink chainsets more expensive to fit since I'd need to also change the BB.
So to my question, the FC-M191 has the rings I would like 28/38/48, and goes on a square ended BB axle, but belongs to the Alvio range, and the FC-M443 belongs to the Deore range.
Would the M191 work with a Deore front Derailleur ( I have purchased a FD-M531 to allow for bigger chainsets...), Deore compatible chain, and 11-34/9 cluster?0 -
I read it, you said FC151 which confused me. The 191 is an 7/8 speed chainset, may not work right with 9 speed gear.
The derailler should work, but you need to check what axle length the new chainset requires, and what axle length you currently have.0
