I'm assuming if you've clicked on this, you're either intrigued - or a Geologist.

I'm currently touting for employment and am going down all avenues to get it. Unfortunately nearly everyone I know whose managed to get a Geology role already had an 'in' at the company.

Ideally I'd like to go into the engineering side of geology, namely site investigation - but am aware that times are tough and any industry related role would be good experience.

In my favour - I'm holding a degree from a decent university, and possess decent social skills (a bit rare in geology...) Would be prepared to do unpaid work experience

Not in my favour - I have no industry experience, I would prefer to stay in the North West

So bit of a long shot, but if any of you work in the industry and have any advice/pointers I'd love to hear them!

Your best bet may be to send out a CV to several local companies stating exactly what you have above, it makes you sound honest and willing especially the offer to do unpaid work experience (OK there's a risk that someone will take advantage but it's a chance you'll have to take). I work in Civil Engineering and I suspect that there are many companies in the Geotechnical Engineering / Geology side of things that are in a similar position to us in that they have quite a bit of work but are having to take jobs for low fees and therefore cannot afford to recruit. The company I work for is considering the very route you suggest in taking on unpaid 'interns' who will get experience and, if the market picks up enough, could end up with a paid job. If you make an approach to somone who isn't advertising vacancies it can also help you stand out if they do recruit in the near future. In the first instance the tricky bit is working out whether to say you are prepared to work for nothing up front as you may end up doing yourself out of possible payment!

I did a Geology degree and now work as a contaminated land consultant.

Is Environmental Consultancy an area you'd be interested in?

I'm literally up for anything within the general field (except rig work, seasickness and the N sea don't mix as I've learnt the hard way)
