  • Do you wear padded shorts? - if not get some :)

Is your saddle level?- means your bum will be perched on it properly.

How much riding do you do? - Most ppl get a sore arse to start with

Does your arse fit your saddle? - sit bones are meant to sit on the saddle evenly to bear the weight.

What saddle have you got now?

It could be a few things I think.

The seat is could be too narrow for you - so your sit bones are not on the saddle but hanging off.

Make sure that the seat is reasonably flat - no silly angles.

Another thing would be for you to just sit through it. It might sound a bit "WTF" at first, but my behind would hurt quite a lot if I was on a new saddle - especially when I've been off the bike for a few days or have not gone on longer rides for a while. This is probably the case with you too - seriously, just sit through it - I guess it's down to your behind getting used to the saddle.

Is the pain quite strong? Sort of a very, very fast tingling?
  • Bare in mind new saddles can take a few rides to 'break in' and become more comfortable after those first few rides. Also if you havent ridden much before as said above it will be uncomfortable until your 'tissues' toughen up a bit and get used to being on a saddle.

But, good padded shorts, a saddle that fits your bum bones and a good level saddle position help. If its a rubbing problem (i.e. rawness, stinging pain, like a burn) there are creams to help 'lubricate' everything up an stop rubbing saddle soreness. If its aching and tender on your bones then its the afore mentioned issues.

Some saddles are uncomfortable once bought a 30 quid Selle Royal Xsenium gel saddle it was huge with two large clear elastomers and the most uncomfortable thing ever, found a 7 quid Tesco one comfier lol

My next bike had a Specialised BG but it got damaged in a crash so I changed to a Sportourer FLX Gel Flow Mens and its good had it less than a week but I like it.

When you got the new saddle, did you get your sit bones measured?

It's a pad like that - you sit on it and the indentation left get measured and you get a recommended saddle width.

I get a sore rear end as well, most likely because I don't ride enough. I try to position my sit bones on the flanges of the saddle rather than my arse cheeks as they gets numb after a while. Also it puts the base of the soldier on the nose of the saddle making that numb too :?
You might try adjusting yourself backwards to be sure the bones are on the flanges.

Price has nothing to do with comfort. Standard forum answer - Charge Spoon, £20 odd, and very few people seem to complain.

  • Ive got a charge spoon and its pretty good. As per previous message, price and comfort are not always linked. You need to find one that fits your bum. could be a cheapo one just as easily as it could be a selle italia type jobbie
  • I've got a Spoon winging its way to me now, ltd edition with a blue underside and £5 less than the standard one (evans). I'll reoort back when I've tried it. It's got to be a improvement on the Carrera saddle fitted, my butt kills after 1 mile and before you ask, I ride quite a lot.

I have a Spoon on my mtb and it's great.

Which bit of your derrier gets sore? If it's around your gentlemans parts you might try tipping the saddle forward very slightly.

  • The spoon is a massive improvement, I only did 5 miles today but my butt didn't hurt at all and it will only get better with use.
  • Again I will highlight the amazing WTB Rocket Race series saddles, as used by Steve Peat!
I have them on my bikes and swear by this saddle, I can sit on it all day without any complaints

if you want a little more padding in a similar saddle to the charge spoon try the "sdg bel air rl" out. i like the spoon but prefer the bel air. can also try having the nose of the saddle a little bit nose down, not that you're sliding off it though. that'll transfer a bit of the load onto your arms. remember that your backside has'nt evolved to ever sit on a bike saddle so give it a break regularly and pedal standing up for a bit. ride more it'll get better :)
  • I have been riding for three years now and have had five different saddles and two different bikes. At first the more expensive saddles made a big difference and were more comfortable. However, nowadays i seem to have a backside made of wood and can ride on anything. You get used to the battering but undoubtedly a better saddle helps. If you find a shop that lets you have a saddle on trial for three months let me know!
  • Thanks alot i am getting one straight away.

Got a madison flux yesterday (believe it's just a rebranded spoon) sooo comfy compared to my san marco ponza which by comparison was like sitting on a block of wood, seriously painful past the 30 mile mark!
  • SDG bel air rl. Most comfy saddle i have ever used.

gotta say i loved the saddle on my old hardrock, so much so i'm going to go to a spec shop and get another!
  • Any recommendations on padded shorts? I know I got a cheap pair of lycra shorts that I wear under some trousers and they work well, so what ya wearing for padding?
