mixing tyres front/back

Is there's any real reason to avoid doing this?

I have Continental Ultra Sports on my bike but eventually I want to swap to something a bit stickier, lighter and with less rolling resistance when I've worn them out. Today however I've managed to pick up a puncture that has also caused a 5mm cut in the tyre. I've repaired the inner tube but there is now a bulge in the tyre when inflated so I'm thinkng that I'm going to have to replace this tyre before I can go out again.

Would it be ok to replace this rear tyre with something like a Conti GP4000S or a Pro Race 3, but keep the ultra sport on the front? or would the difference in grip front/back be too great and cause the bike to be unstable under braking or in high speed cornering?

Or should I just play it safe and put another Ultra Sport on?

I could really do with not paying out for two top end tyres at the moment hence the question.

Thanks in advance.

Rich

  • Right now I have a Conti ultra on the front, and a GatorSkin on the back.

It wasnt a setup that I chose, as I originally went for Gators front and back, but my maiden voyage put an irrepairable tear in my front Gator (Abbey wood is essentially the UK answer to post war Beirut.... )

I have no issues what so ever.

i'd move the front tyre to the rear, and put the new gp4000s on the front

the rear gets more tyre wear, the front is more critical for braking, cornering
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

Put heavier tyres on for the winter and worry about this next spring..
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

just done a similar thing - put on a new Pro Race 3 - it would be lovely to change both but even my bike vanity stops at changing a tyre just because its not the same front and back - they are both black and circular I trust?

The sainted Sheldon Brown RIP advised that the best tyre goes on the front wheel. Other than that, those tyres are close enough of a match for practical purposes.

    I have Force / Attack....

    2 different tyres.

No reason at all not to mix and match, as long as they compliment each other and have similar rolling properties.

    Thanks guys.

As a secondary question, does anyone know where I can find a picture of a bike with red pro race 3 tyres on it? I really can't find one anywhere.

A red bike with those tyres would be even better!
  • try rubino pro 3's I got them on my fixed and they are great, picked up the pair on ebay (and they are in orange :D) do all colours as well

Going to put open corsa's on my Dale when the summer comes round and I am fit to be on the bike again

ProRace 2's rather than 3's but...

(carpark for last year's Fred Whitton, in case anyone's wondering... Wifey took this pic while I was signing on : bike was considerably dirtier when I finished !)
