Hi,

Just wondered what a respectable time was around the 8 loop?

Took us 3 hours last time but that included a bit of time looking for my mates saddle bolt. I have heard of fast people doing it in 90 minutes but I prefer to savour the trails and enjoy the scenery the bits I can see through sweat streaked glasses that is.

Yeah same,..wow 90 mins. Pretty fast eh!?
  • I can do it in 3.5 hours which is a vast improvement from when I first started biking. 3 hours to do the top loop!

I've done it in just over 2 hours although that was when the top section of the upper loop was in a better state. It doesn't really matter how long it takes as long as you have a good ride. There's all sorts ride Gisburn, when we stopped digging for lunch it was amazing seeing the diversity of people passing us. At one poin there were two guiys on Ornage 5s followed closely by a family with young kids (this was on a fireroad section on the bottom loop, not Whelpstone crag).

  • Takes me between 2 hours 20 - 3 hours, depending on how much I rest and if Im with my mate or not.

1st time took me like 4 hours plus, but that just proves to me how much fitter and better I'm riding.

Yeah I agree stumpy, me and my mate passed some familes and then got passed by some quick guys. Really good to see so many people out and about. I have been back riding just over a year and Gisburn was my first eye opener to what a trail centre is.
  • did it in 90 mins taking it easy not sure what i could do flat out, im more of a xc rider so endurance more my thing

    Wow. fast

3 hours for me on average. Some of it's a slog at the moment and almost unrideable in place in the top section (well for me anyways). Still a great day out though :-)

How are the trails at Gisburn looking now? When I went before the summer they were badly beaten up and need in of repair apart from the Hully Gully section. Been thinking about going back but won't bother if they haven't been repaired.

I did a night ride there last week and they've smoothed out a lot of the really rocky bits on the climbs near the top

Matt_ most of it's always been fine. Hully Gully got repaired in the spring, we did a day walking Homebaked but it didn't need that much work and the forestry guys are working on the section up by the crag re-surfacing the trail with limestone. Probably only 15% of it was bad at it's worst and then only a few hundred metres were unrideable. Oh that berm at the end of the upper loop that collapsed has been repaired as well.

    Hi Stumpy,

I have ridden Gisburn a few times and I think it is brilliant. The new northshore is superb and a credit to the builders. Just out of curiosity where do you see Gisburn heading as a trail centre in general? I mean do you see extension/new bits to the loop etc?

The part that particularly sticks in my mind as being worn out was the section leading up to and around the crag right at the top end of the trail. I was with a friend that had done it previously and he said it wasn't like that when he originally did it a few months before. We did notice a few piles of stone dotted around so presumed that was going to be to repair the track.

I might head back one night next week and give it another go :D

Matt_ that's the section the forestry guys have been repairing, they've had some difficulty getting the stone in.

Yes there is plenty more planned for Gisburn. The XC volunteers are working on a new section of singletrack to bypass about a mile of fireroad on the lower loop, Cyclejunkies, Ed Oxley and Hope are working on a Freeride type line. Plans are progressing for a much bigger carpark with toilets and some skills loops, plans are fairly advance dfor this. Beyond that there's around another 4 or 5 miles of trail scoped out, some around the existing loops to remove more fireroad and a couple of mile extension off the top of the crag section.

I'm sure we'll continue to add other bits, the section with the logs wasn't part of the original plans for example. The great thing is the head Forrester, Martin Colledge is driving it all personally so unlike some of the trail centres it's not a one off build. As long as there's volunteers or funding available I think Gisburn will continue to expand.

  • we have done full 8 in 1.45 on a night ride 3 weeks ago doing it again on thursday night because last time i did top loop they had repaired most of the bit up to welpstone and it was very good again. This bit is for stumpyjohn is the rumor true about a pump track and 4x tracks being added.
if i had my time again would i take the time to make the right choices

No plans for a 4x track as far as I am aware, we have talked about putting a pump track in the quarry but there's no firm plans at the moment. That said we weren't planning the log rides either

Good read that, shows the planning that goes into a new section of trail. With the backing of the head forester and great volunteers Gisburn is going to develop into a top trail.

Thats a pretty good time. A mate of mine did both loops last week in an hour twenty and he's a proverbial whippet. Good effort.

did Gisburn on Sunday, booth loops - took about 3.30hrs, not the fastest but i enjoyed every minute..

Gives me something to aim at beating next time - and even though i was having to let others through not one person moaned i was holdoing them up, infact each gave words of encouragement.. That is why i love this sport (if only id started earlier :-) )

Twas a bit muddy on Sunday, the new section of trail we were building had to be bailed out before we lay the stone.

Aye but you were on a 1 x 9 weighing 400 tonnes

Given my current lack of fitness I reckon it'd still take me around 4 hours to get around
