wow theyre nearly free, just reached the trapped miners. the joy of the families on the news is almost palpable. Its an odd world isnt it, in one thread its all petty small minded "i dont want my taxes given to chavs" and the other side of the world are strangers helping strangers. Fantastic news for the 33.

Yep, it's great to see the way people rally round in a crisis. They are almost top-side, just a small matter of a 680 metre ascent in a small drill shaft. They reckon its a journey time of 30 -40 minutes. Yikes!!
  • geat news for them but I'll miss @chileanminer on Twitter.

I asked my wife for a chilean miner last night. She said, what's that? and i said, go down to the bottom of my shaft and stay there til christmas

Well, it is sturday night and i've had a sherry.
  • Sky News are showing the effort to get them up in typical style. They have a counter in the corner of the screen with 0 of 33 Miners rescued. The operation should start within an hour.

So far five miners out but three rescuers were sent down to help them, a gain of two out then. I'd have thought that the miners were perfectly capable of loading themselves into the capsule.
  • Someone at work has told me that one of the miners has a wife and a mistress waiting for him at the top. I reckon he'll ask to go back down.
  • have you noticed the resued miners have been given Oakley Radar glasses with Black Iridium lenses to protect their eyes? you wouldn't get that over here, probably get a hessian sack over your head instead....

    Tansitions missed a trick here:

"I'm Tyler Farrar, miner for Team Chilean Mines. During a rescue I need perfect vision. I need to protect my eyes from changeable light and UV rays......"

  • Here's one who isn't perhaps so keen on the publicity:

Perhaps he's wishing he can be last out in the hope that people will be bored by then and he can just sneak away quietly.

I feel sorry for Rolly the Clown, what is he to do now? Every silver lining has a cloud.

I saw a bit of it and when the president was giving them a big hug it made me wonder if it happened in the UK who'd be pleased to have Gordon Brown or Cameron descend upon them like that? You'd think you had already been punished enough after 2 months underground

The miner who celebrated by high fiving the crowd, chanting and hugging the president will become an icon. They will probably issue a stamp with his face on it like they did with Nobby Solano (I realise he wasn't stuck down a mine though  )

If it was Gordon Brown or Two Jags Prescott, the miners would have refused to come out of the ground

He's not from Chile either, he's Peruvian. (Solano, not the miner).

I don't understand why it took so long.

Couldn't we just have sent Maggie/ Arthur there, They have experience in getting miners out damn quick.

It occurred to me today that if this incident had happened before the era of the internet and 24 hr news there would have been no rescue attempt. There would have been no way they would have spent the millions to rescue 33 miners

    Cynical? Moi?

Selfishly, it's the first time that I've felt something more than mild curiousity about my countrymen.

So now we have an empty cavern free...

Plenty of room for the bankers and MPs, seal the shaft and you're done.
