Hopefully some swingeing cuts to police budgets will force them to wind their necks in, if this is what occupies their time.

Sounds like Ian Ashmeade is a fascinating character: todger topiarist, pea-shooter champion, and model of helmets for the assertive cyclist...0
-
the police dont choose what calls they go to if they have a complaint they got to go and investigate ive no doubt they also feel its a waste of their time to.0
-
a shame - a bit of fun, but if thats a representation does'nt Ian Ashmeade need to "grow up a bit"?
a good job its seen as Mr Ashmeade's bush otherwise the police request to " reshape the bush or face an £80 fine." could have been a bit personal and interesting for his wife!
I presume it now looks like Mrs Bobbit has been round?0 -
What a c0ck0

If someone makes a complaint that they are harassed/alarmed/distressed by something then the police are duty bound to investigate it...
Maybe you should be targeting your grief at the person who made the complaint?0 -

Agreed heartily... had one vindictive neighbour complain to the police about a car parked up for 2 hours (very legally parked up)
Lied thru their teeth saying it had been there 2 days..... yes the police duty bound to follow up and cause distress unwittingly.... must have 'cost' a fair few hours of wasted police time.
That neighbour will get comeuppance .. one day .... I never forget (big ears like an elephant)0 -
I wonder if any other bushes got trimmedbagpuss0

We have a neighbour like that, one of my housemates parents came to visit and her mum is disabled so they parked the car in one of three disabled parking sections of our street (basically at three points down the road there is just a section marked off for disabled drivers.) The neighbour who is disabled came home and couldn't use the space nearest her house and blew a top (dispite there being normal spaces which had opened up right next to the disabled place) she then drove to another street with a disabled parking place and walked back to the house (she is registered disabled but can walk fine- we've never asked more!) and phoned the police saying that a non-disabled car had parked in "her" space and had been sat there for a few days!!! Police were not happy with her when they turned up and found what was really going on!0 -
Just shows how crap Cambs Police are. Complain about proper crime and they are not interested. Something that is essentially a trivial matter brought to their attention by a busy body and they are suddenly interested. I would like to know exactly how they think it is a criminal matter and whether an offence has actually been committed?Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.
Think how stupid the average person is.......
half of them are even more stupid than you first thought.0 -
The hedge has been shaped like that since 2002 apparently and it just takes one complaint for the police to do something. Ridiculous .......0

There's a world pea shooting championship?0

Let's hope this spawn of Mary Whitehouse never gets to see the Cerne Abbas Giant.0

Police said if he had not had trimmed the bush back, he would have been fined for a public order offence
I'm curious as to what public order offence he was alleged to be committing.
S5 of the public order act states:"(1) A person is guilty of an offence if he:
(a) uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b) displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby."
Clearly a) is not relevant, so its b) that applies.
The bush can be said to be a visible representation.
Can it really be said to be: -
threatening ( I doubt it)
abusive ( I would argue not abusive given where it is or how long its been there)
insulting ( to whom? and given its been there 8 years before anyone complains, it can't be very insulting.
I would be confident that this offence is not made out on the facts.
Any other public order offences anyone?Want to know the Spen666 behind the posts?

Perhaps he hit the person who complained with one of his peas!0

the person who complained should be hunted down and slaughtered in cold blood. complete and utter c*nt. if i was that bloke i would have a giant blow up penis in the front garden with a sign saying 'F8ck you complaining c*nt' it would be worth the fine0

Baby rage, can get to you! Time to get a seat/trailer to give them some fresh air & you some training?
Would love to say it gets lots better but with my 3 & 5 yr olds I still consider anything past 6 a bonus!0 -

have a three year old too, sleeps to 8am no worries.
trailer is on the cards, now little one is old enough. i always used to think pre-6am was middle of the night but at the moment its pre-5am i think is the graveyard shift.
also not helping is an enforced 2 weeks off bike so my usual time out is gone!0 -
It's Cambridge, so the complainant was probably distressed about having his knob shaped out, and on show, at his brothers."There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pity to damage yours."0

Spen,
I would assume (the article doesn't explain) that the person reporting it hadn't seen it before and was 'insulted' by it...
Whether that would be found in court is another matter, due to the length of time there and lack of complaints received.0 -
Theres a shopping centre called Cockhedge. Ideal advertising opportunity there methinks. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.0 -

I concur.
My attention was drawn to thelast section where the police were quoted as saying if he had not moved it, then he would have been given a fixed penalty for a public order offence.
Having done some work with HMIC recently on the use of out of court disposals and seen how many inappropriate ones there are issued, this seemed to back up my workWant to know the Spen666 behind the posts?
