Recommend me a fold away waterproof

I went out a few days ago and got caught in a shower. Got a bit wet, which I didn't mind, but would rather have the ability to put on something that folds small enough to fit in a rear jersey pocket.

Anyone with any ideas up to about £40-50?

Thanks

The 3 items covered in this review (Endura Rebound, Altura Pocket Rocket & Montane Featherlite Velo) may fit the bill:-

More showerproof than waterproof, but if the main consideration is having something that packs up absolutely tiny, then that's inevitable.

+ 1 for the Montane - particularly for portability.

Just got a Pocket Rocket, comes up a little short in body length but absolutely no problem keeping me dry in last Sundays downpours.

NONE of 'em work in proper rain (well for about 5 mins).. but at least they keep wind chill down which is important.

I got the Montane Featherlite Velo last month.

As JG SI says, it doesn't stop the heaviest of rain, but for light showers it's great to have. It works very well in the wind too, as it's not nice having saturated kit with the wind cutting right through you!

Invest in some thing that lasts, works, fits fantastically and looks good. I rode the 2010 Autumn Epic in a Rapha stowaway and found it comfortable and very dry despite the constant heavy rain and fast pace. Some people will say it's over priced but if kit lasts season after season and works then it's good value. Don't make the mistake of trying to save a few quid and then have kit that almost works or is nearly comfortable.

+1 Montane Featherlight. Goes into seatpack, jersey pocket and can be attached under saddle, on top bar or on to rucksack with included Velcro fastener. But watch the price - I've seen it vary from £18 to £32. I paid the latter - but it's done me proud when the wind gets up, the heavens open or I'm cold. Great fall-back item. Of course it won't beat waterproof jackets twice or three times the price.

Have a look at Gore bike wear, i can't find the line but i think that it's the Gore path, it rolls up into a little ball, it's well fitted and it's goretex! Slightly expensive though, but well worth it, the first waterproof that i've had that doesn't make you sweat like a .....

also got a Gore Oxygen IV in blue for sale too - although that is full on goretex.

if anyone wants that or the montaine shout... They are both superb, one for showers and the the other for rain.

Heavier stuff is only for commutes, where you are likely to have to ride knowing it is WET.
  • Firstly, thanks Scrumple - yours would have been too small for me.

Anyway, I did order a Montane Featherlite Velo from fat birds. £36 delivered.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read/respond.

Wash the Montane in Nikwak Techwash and then Nikwak TX.Direct wash-in re-proofer to maintain its water repellency.

  • 40- 50 quid its hard almost impossible to find a decent rain jacket, whatever you use you are going to get just as wet inside through sweat, might be an idea to save a little more and get a gore jacket, i ve also had a couple of assos rain jackets, but for usual wet n windy english days the gore is my favourite think i paid about £110 a few years ago, but worth every penny.

Another +1 for the Montane, not perfectly waterproof but tiny and works for me.
