Stem angle up or down?

Stem is currently fitted in orthodox upright angle, but wonder if
worth playing around reversing?

Does the stem have to be fitted with stem angle upright, or can it be reversed without risk of anything?
If either way is ok, what are the perceived benefits/deficits of either way?

My Ritchey stem in question has a 84/6 angle (whatever that means?).

Yes, they can be reversed. Give it a go! Is all personal preference.
  • Swap em around, sounds like 84mm long and 6 degree of rise/fall which ever way you look at it.

    Many thanks for advice.

I'll have a play around reversing (inverting) stem now thanks, considering ok to do so. I initially wondered about potential reverse obtuse angle of stem maybe adversely affecting load on fork stem in some way, but you've put my mind at ease to tinker...
  • There's a correct way of replacing the stem as the centre bolt on the cap usually takes up adjustment in the ahead set  (if this is not the case with your bike, don't read on)

Tighten the stem bolts just sufficiently to be able to square up the bars with the wheel then tighten the centre bolt to remove headset bearing play - caution here - get it right.

    Then tighten the stem bolts.

Be nice to all cyclists - you may want to borrow a pump one day :-)
