Going to buy a Shimano 105 5700 rear deurailleur. How do I know if I need a medium cage or short cage? What's the difference?

With my limited knowledge the cage length is to do with the maximum number of teeth between the smallest and biggest gear on the cassette the deurailleur can cope with.
longer cage means bigger jump.
What cassette you planning on using and then you can be advised as to which of the two to buyFCN 7

quick search of wiggle says the medium cage will take a max 22t difference front and 39t total difference whereas the short will only take 33t total but still 22t difference front.
I dont know how to work out whats defined as total though but assuming its a simple addition thing then the medium will allow you 17teeth between lowest and hightest on the cassette and the short will only allow 11 assuming you have a 22t difference on the front.FCN 7

Okay so assuming my assumptions above are correct then you'd need a medium. however if you had a 50/34 compact on the front you only have 16 difference on the front so add that to the 13 you have on the back you could get away with a short?
Can someone who definately knows confirm this please, either that or tell me i'm a plank and dont know what i'm talking aboutFCN 7

Simple answer,
Triple chainset - long cage
Double or Compact chainset - Short cageHe is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
