I`ve hit a stump, I`m looking for an all mountain bike for 2.5k, I`ve looked around for ages, and cant decide, does anyone have some advice?
I was looking for an orange 5, but it would be bottom of the range, a cube stereo,a Commencal Meta, or even a Iron Horse 6 point 4. I`m not an agressive rider, but hope to take the bike on some trips across europe over the next couple of years, so Im wanting a bike I can use and grow into,
any advice or recomendations would be welcome?

Pretty sure you can find them for 2.5K with some shopping around. Don't be fooled by the "short" travel, it's an incredibly capable machine.

have a look at a canta cruz heckler. the frames are only £800 now so give you £1700 to kit it out which I a fair bit to play with.

get some 160mm 36 mill stanction forks on the front and it's more than capeable of going down anything while still being a blast on single track and well manoured enough on the climbs

I do like the look of the cube`s but everyone is raving about the orange 5`s, is it worth touching the basic model?

  • + 1 what yeehamagee said.

I do have a medium Attack 6.8 reduced from 2.5k to 2k where I work.

..if you don't mind waiting till December and spending £3k, check out the Whyte 146s, 26lbs, 150MM travel, similar geometry to Attack Trail, double/triple or single + device compatible, dropper seatpost cable guides....worth saving the extra for.

Ye the 146 does look awesome but i wouldnt say it was a full on AM rig more of a lightweight agressive trall bike,

Still find these latest 150mm 32mm stantion forks a bit twangy when things get really choppy, they cope ok but dont feel as solid and controlled as a 35/36mm fork.

And what do you mean by am bike? are you going to be throwing it of 4'+ drops and down full dh runs?

AM bikes are usually 150/160/170mm travel with fox36/lyriks and burley components weighing around 30-35lb.

Your list is more trail bike orientated.

£3k is the new £2.5k

Getting on for 6" of travel. Light enough, and geometry sharp enough esp. when "talased', for general trail riding.

All the bike(s) you'll ever need? Certainly covers most of the FS territory....

That extra 500 quid can be a hell of a lot for most people.
We don't all dine on quail's eggs and caviar, and just decide on a sum of 2.5K. Some of us have to plan and save long and hard to get that much together.

Sure. But most people contemplating dropping £2.5k on a bike probably enjoy the odd quail's egg or similar. A bike is not a utilitarian purchase at that level - £350 more than your own recommendation.

Dismount and lessen the risk of vertigo perhaps?

Ummm well having all those quail eggs and caviar is all good and dandy, but if your thick as porridge that ain't all good...I make it £150 more than his own recomendation...so I will stick to burgers and stella and still be good at subtraction....

Well the last time I checked, £3,000 was £350 more than £2,650.

    Another helping of porridge perhaps?

    IanTrcp...
So, let me get this straight. My advice was "one of these will suit you great, I'm certain you can get one in your price range if you shop around"

    And your advice is...
"Spend £500 more than you want"?

    Is that right?

I was in a similar situation, I decided to go exotic... I have a Mondraker dune, i my opinion and riding style way better than a lapierre spicy.
bike has huge traction, climbs better than all others ive tested. pedaling platform is really stiff, yet no need of any propedal. yet once pointed down hill it is so plush nimble and fast.
I dont think the specialized enduro comes any where close.

try a mondraker, youll be convinced... and lots have huge discounts now

My advice would be to buy a trail bike for UK riding, 4-5in travel, and hire a bike when you go to Europe.
You can hire a Kona Stinky for £200 a week at most European resorts/trails and it will probably cost you just as much to take your own bike, taking into account airline costs, baggage, insurance etc. Plus you won't have to worry about it getting trashed through baggage check-in or whilst riding.
