I got my daughter one about 6 months ago when she was 2 and 1/2. To start with her balance wasn't very good and she got discouraged pretty easily. Since then we've seen her balance develop. She started doing things like walking along kerbs and standing on one leg just for fun. It was then we knew she would be able to go the balance bike.
About 4 weeks ago, spurred on by seeing a little boy on his in the park she wanted to get back on. There's no stopping her now. She's out on it every night, gliding down hills etc.
I take her over rough stuff as well. She's three this week.
I guess the clue is in the name, balance bike. They need to have a bit of balance otherwise they just find it too difficult and want a "proper" bike with pedals and stabilisers. Incidentally many of my daughters friends with stabilisers cannot even pedal their bikes. So I'd say that a balance bike is great but only try it when they show some signs of being ready.
Oops this is the crudcatcher. Should I have placed a witty comment instead?

I got that exact bike for my son and he loves it. I was initially sceptical but we're so glad we got him it. He can basically coast for long distances on a shallow incline with both feet up.
He'll now be graduating to an Islabikes Knoc with pedals and no stablisers for Christmas and this one will go to his wee brother.
My advice: get one.Giant Trance X 2010
Specialized Tricross Sport
My Dad's old racer
Trek Marlin 29er 20120 -

first video that what he could be doing in a few yearsYou only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
Yes, bought my son a like-a-bike same as in the above video when he was about 2 and a half, now nearly 3 and is balancing very well. Cant keep up walking with him any more have to jog. Also he will scoot a couple of miles before getting tired, would not walk that far on his own. 8)0

Yeah my 3yr old son loves his balance bike and it is great for going on long walks as having the bike means they can just keep on going and going. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.

My son has one of these: http://www.steadyeddiebikes.co.uk/ He showed very little interest in it until he was about 2 1/2 but loves it now.
Going to buy him some Cuprinol for Christmas and teach him the basics of bike maintenance.0
