Reinstalling headset

Hey all
Have done a search which has thrown up all sorts of contradictory advice. Have stripped the old bike and persuaded a friend to repaint it. When I come to reinstall the headset, should I regrease (or will this change the dampening and thus handling?) and should I use a make shift press, or will a rubber mallet and abit of care do the trick?
Regards, Phil

You'll need a press, I made one from a length of threaded rod for next to nothing. I also put a smear of anti-seize between the headset and the frame.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

Ideal, what did you use to contact the cups? wood seems to be largely discredited.

Just some bits of hardwood I had lying around. I think pine would work fine too if you had some decent large washers behind it to spread the load.http://www.strathspey.co.uk - Quality Binoculars at a Sensible Price.

Def regrease and yes use a press or make one otherwise it can be tricky to make sure they're aligned0
