Boardman Team Carbon or Cervelo S1

Been reading all sorts of forums for a couple of weeks now. I am about to buy my first road bike. It will be primarily for comuuting (at present i am commuting on an old MTB)

Was looking to spend around £1000 and narrowed it down to:

A Boardman from Halfords which seems to be a good bike but suffers on various forums because of the Halfords service. This does not bother me too much as I have a good local LBS who I will use to get it setup properly.

or

A pinnacle from evans which is also carbon but doesnt appear to be as well specced as the boardamn.

Had pretty much decided on the Boardman when i discovered the Cervelo S1 which apparently is a brilliant frame. I cant see any for sale at the moment second hand but I could get a new one and put basic parts on it then upgrade in the future as funds allow.

A Cervelo with Boardman TC spec kit on it is not a £1000 bike.

If your budget is £1k, the Boardman takes a lot of beating. I tried a few bikes before buying mine and the TC was in a different league at that price.

I think I have made life hard for myself by lookig into this to much.

I am certain a boardman is a far better bike than I am a cyclist and that I will be overjoyed with it. It will be the nicest bike I have ever had.

The Boardman does tend to be the best value in it's price range but with looking at this time of year there will be a lot of places discounting '10 stock to make way for the '11 gear.

It's also going to be a slow time of year for road bike sales so there may be better deals out there than the Boardies for once. LBS may be able to offer a discount. Halfords won't.

I haven't got any links to support this theory as it's too dangerous for me to look at new bikes!!

Indeed. the Cervelo frame along is nearly £1k isn't is?

It's difficult how you could put together a whole bike based on that frame with brand new parts for much less that £1500, and £1750 is probably more realistic in terms of puting parts on it that would be fitting for such a frame.
  • I'm on my second Cervelo now and love the ride and quality. My latest is an R3 which I got from the guys at www.primera-sports.com I told them what riding I do and they cam back with three specs and great prices. I club mate did buy the Boardman and although the groupset was good the frame was not a good ride.

Cannot wait for tomorrows commute. A PB is on the cards I feel :D

What gave that one away?

S1 is more unique than a Boardman - but the Boardman package as a whole is a great deal at £1K. If you can somehow get an S1 similarly kitted out for anywhere close to £1K - take it. Otherwise go Boardman.
  • Thought I would resurrect this thread.

Been running the boardman for a year and has been a great bike. Got me around some long rides up some big hills even a few through some TT's and got me the cycling bug.

Never really got over the hankering for the S1. Finally picked one up this week for a good price and looks a million dollars. Probably just psychological or could be the aero wheels but feels damned quick.

I don't understand all those people who say you cannot spec the Cervelo S1 up for less than £1K+ (or £1500 somebody quoted). Realise it's an old thread but bike prices have since gone up further.

More than happy with mine below (all secondhand parts bar wheels & tyres). Could have easily beaten £1K if I'd skimped a bit on the wheels!

Recently bought an S1 frameset for £400
Ultegra SL shifters with cables £85
    Ultegra Rear Mech £40
    Ultegra 6600 brakeset £35
    Ultegra Front mech £15
    Chain KMC £20
FSA Carbon chainset & BB £90
    NEW Shimano RS80 wheels £290
    NEW Michelin PR3 tyres £40
    Ritchey bars £10
    NEW FSA stem £30
    Arione saddle £30

If I've missed anything it'll just be a few quid eg. tubes

Very happy with it at the price and given its versatility for road/triathlons, it's just the job. Sooner have the S1 than a Boardman Team Carbon any day of the week for what I need. Recently an S1 frameset on sale here for £400 and this week on eBay there appears to be a number of S1 bikes/frames.

    Oh Fizik Bar Tape £10

The Tristore were doing a new Ultegra equipped Cervelo S1 for about £1.5k recently.

I got a second hand S1 frame and with everything else new, the build came to £990 or so.
  • Yep I agree. I got my S1 complete with decent spec parts - second hand but hardly used - for under £900. You just have to keep your eye out on ebay. People seem to pay more for the smaller frames - they must be more sought-after.

    Love the bike!
